The original house dates from around 1620–1650, a period when the city was expanding rapidly and plots were developed according to the characteristic layout of a front house, a middle section, and a rear house. This typology is still recognizable in the spatial structure of the home and determines the logic of its layout. The apartment is located in the rear section, which historically served a more utilitarian function compared to the front section. The oak roof structure, dating from the seventeenth century, is still fully visible and forms the load-bearing and defining element of the upper living level. Various authentic features remain, including inscriptions in the ceiling beams and the original spiral staircase. Interventions such as opening up the attic floor and adding the Roof terrace light and space without disrupting the original layout. The direct connection to the outdoors reinforces this: the Roof terrace the living space and transforms the top floor into a fully-fledged living area. The result is a home where over four centuries of architectural history converge.
The living area is located under the roof and serves as the spatial highlight of the home. Here, a bright, open living space unfolds, where the roof structure remains visible and the volume is fully utilized. The sloping roof surfaces create an intimate scale, while the ridge height provides a sense of freedom. The living room offers direct access to the Roof terrace, allowing the interior and exterior to flow seamlessly into one another. The kitchen-dining area is located on the floor below and forms a more private, functional space. Here, cooking and dining take center stage, separate from the living area but connected via the authentic spiral staircase. This staircase is a distinctive feature within the home: an original connection between the levels that is not only functional but also brings the history of the house to life.
The bedrooms are spread across the floors, each with its own character, with tranquility and light taking center stage. The master bedroom is located on the lower floor, where natural light streams in gently through the window, lending the space a sheltered, calm atmosphere. The second room is well-suited as a home office or children’s room. Under the roof is a more intimate sleeping area, where the sloping roof surfaces and exposed beams give the space its character. Here, the architecture becomes tangible in the experience of sleeping; the roof encloses the space and creates a sense of security. The bathroom is functionally designed, featuring a bathtub and shower combination and a double sink placed by the window. Materials and colors are kept subdued, allowing the bathroom to harmonize with the serene atmosphere of the sleeping floor.
The Roof terrace Immediately to the living room and serves as a natural extension of the living space. The transition between indoors and outdoors is Immediately uninterrupted, making the terrace feel like an integral part of the home. The terrace is spacious and offers various spots to sit, eat, or simply enjoy the outdoors. Because it is situated at roof level, you look out over the surrounding buildings, with the city’s rooflines and facades forming the backdrop. The presence of greenery softens the overall look and gives the terrace a secluded character. At the same time, the view remains open enough to fully experience the sky and the changing daylight. Due to its elevated location, the terrace benefits from favorable light throughout the day. This makes it a space that is enjoyable not only in the summer but also in the spring and fall.

After we bought this house, the previous owners left a handwritten note for us on the kitchen table, which read as follows:
“It’s so nice and important to know that wonderful people want to take over our home, because it actually hurts a little to leave this lovely place. We’re going to miss it so much!
The sun that shines so beautifully into the kitchen during the summer months. The Roof terrace its Tuscan jasmine, wisteria, and a gorgeous rose, is truly the best spot to enjoy your morning coffee or fire up the BBQ in the evening (where in the city do you get sun from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM?). the peace and quiet you have here without immediate neighbors or noise pollution from the city, even though you’re in the best spot in town with the Jordaan as Rear garden.
Oh, as we write this, we’re wondering if we shouldn’t keep it after all. It’s a gem. You’re going to love it!”
How true their heartfelt words turned out to be in hindsight—this nearly detached home is truly one-of-a-kind! Its green, sunny Roof terrace in the heart of bustling Amsterdam. Its modern finishes and spaciousness, combined with its cozy, authentic details dating back to 1625 and old VOC ships. It’s so hard to leave the place where we’ve felt so at home and happy every single day. But for us, the time has come to let someone else enjoy this home!
