Prinsengracht 213 is part of an ensemble of four warehouses located in Amsterdam's famous canal belt. Built in the seventeenth century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this belt is the backdrop to a rich history of trade and craftsmanship.
The building was constructed in the late seventeenth century and originally served as a warehouse. At a time when Amsterdam was growing into a global center of trade and shipping, countless warehouses sprang up along the canals. Here, goods such as grain, spices, wine, and tobacco were stored awaiting further distribution. Over the centuries, the building has served multiple purposes, from storage space to residential home—a transformation that is characteristic of many canal houses from this period, in which living and working were often closely intertwined.
The name 'De Arend' probably refers to the eagle, a powerful symbol of trade and power, which was regularly used in the seventeenth century to name warehouses.
The neat and distinguished entrance to this building is characterized by a communal hall, featuring classic elements such as clean brickwork and exposed beams. The storage rooms are also accessible from here. The apartment on the second floor can be reached via the wooden staircase in a spacious stairwell.
The apartment has a central hall from which all Rooms are Rooms . At the front, overlooking the Prinsengracht, are the open kitchen and the bright, cozy living room. Adjacent to the living room is an extra room that is ideal as a home office or children's room.
The internal, well-ventilated bedroom is accessible via the hall. French windows to the living room provide light and connection between the rooms. Here too, the high ceilings with wooden beams and the oak floor create a warm and cozy atmosphere. Immediately the bedroom is a practical walk-in closet, ideal for storing clothes and linen.
At the rear of the house is a luxurious bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower, wide washbasin, bathtub, and toilet. The floor is covered with beautiful large sand-colored tiles and "daylight lamps" complete the look.
The hall also has a separate toilet and a storage cupboard, which houses the washing machine and central heating boiler.

When we came to live here, the historic building, the view of the canal, and the fact that you could design and finish the apartment to your own specifications were the deciding factors in our decision to move here. We moved into a loft upstairs, but when our children came along, the space quickly became too small to both live and work in. Fortunately, this apartment in our homeowners' association became available, and we lovingly renovated it, first to be able to work, then again to live in. From this apartment, you have Immediately with the street, the water, and the lively atmosphere outside. The layout is efficient and pleasant, with enough space for a home office or to relax with a view of the water.
The building exudes history with authentic details such as high ceilings with robust beams. This feeling is further emphasized by the lighting in the hall and stairwell, which features LED panels displaying historical images of the warehouse and its surroundings.
The neighborhood is wonderful. The beautiful and lively Prinsengracht canal with great restaurants, popular cafés and coffee shops and the beloved Jordaan neighborhood just around the corner. In addition, there are nice shops in the nearby streets, and on Mondays and Saturdays there are various markets, including the organic Noordermarkt and the Lindengrachtmarkt for tasty groceries, and on Mondays the Westerstraat and the Bric a Brac on the Noordermarkt. You can also choose between a walk to the trendy Westerpark and the historic Vondelpark. Good schools and sports facilities are in the immediate vicinity. A well-kept secret is a walk across Prinseneiland.
Fortunately, we continue to live in our loft above and can still enjoy this wonderful location. But now our children are grown up and have flown the nest, and we have enough space in the loft above. It is a place full of fond memories, and we hope that a new owner will enjoy living in this apartment, which we renovated with love, just as much as we did.
