What the owner will miss
"What I will probably miss most is the fantastic view over the water. Daylight always streamed in through the three open doors. With the doors open and a view of Amsterdam's oldest elm tree in front of the door, my house felt like a peaceful oasis. The reflection of the sun in the water regularly created beautiful light shows on the ceiling."

The building on Nieuwe Herengracht was constructed in 1905 and still exudes the calm monumentality of its era. In 1939, the stairwell was modified, after which the building was formally divided in 1940 into a retail space with four apartments above—a layout that has determined the structure of the building ever since.
The second-floor apartment was redesigned in 2018 by interior designer Dorith Jessurun. She opted for an open floor plan in which the kitchen forms the spatial center. The bathroom was subtly integrated into the living structure, allowing functions to flow seamlessly into one another. The redesign brings clarity and gives the home a calm, logical layout.
The house is also structurally prepared for the future: in 2022, the foundation was completely restored. This intervention remains invisible from the outside, but literally and figuratively strengthens the foundation of the house.
On the canal side, the house opens up via three French balconies. These elegant projections give rhythm to the façade and extra cachet to the living room. The view of the water, the bridge, and the stately opposite side makes this view a living painting.
On the ground floor, there is a spacious private storage room, suitable for bicycles and seasonal storage. It makes the daily use of the house just that little bit more comfortable.
The style of the interior is deliberately understated. Light is given plenty of space, materials are natural, and the finish is sleek but warm. The result is a house with a clear signature: sober in design, stylish in detail.
The living space is light, open, and clearly laid out. Three double doors at the front provide access to French balconies and create a strong connection with the canal. Daylight floods into the space, emphasizing the width of the facade.
The ceiling height between the beams is almost three meters. This gives the room a spacious character. Wide oak floorboards form a warm base. The finish is sleek and detailed.
In the center is a fixed round bench with a dining table, which marks the transition between cooking and living. The kitchen is compact but complete, with appliances such as a dishwasher, hob, oven, and microwave. Open shelves keep the space light and accessible. The living room and kitchen form a whole. The layout is logical, the lines are clear, and it is comfortable to use. Everything has been placed with care.
The bedroom is located at the quiet rear of the house, with French doors opening onto a full-width balcony. Its location in the courtyard provides a sheltered atmosphere and plenty of privacy. Here too, daylight floods in.

What I will probably miss the most is the fantastic view over the water. Daylight always streamed in through the three open doors. With the doors open and a view of Amsterdam's oldest elm tree in front of the door, my home felt like a peaceful oasis. The reflection of the sun in the water regularly created beautiful light shows on the ceiling. The nearby Hoftuin was also a favorite place to sit outside and enjoy a good meal.
A few years ago, I completely renovated the apartment. The open kitchen allowed me to cook while my friends sat nearby on the couch. The large white wall was perfect for cozy movie nights with the projector. I will definitely miss those moments.
I look back on my years on Nieuwe Herengracht with great pleasure and hope that someone else will experience as much happiness and beautiful memories here as I did.
