Design vision

Nicolaas Maesstraat 20 and Pieter de Hoochstraat 50 were initially planned to be built as two residences. Later in the process, this was changed, resulting in the current situation. The building dates from 1914 and appears to be part of an attractive ensemble stretching from Pieter de Hoochstraat 48 to Nicolaas Maesstraat 24
The corner building itself bears the hallmarks of classic residential architecture from early 20th-century construction with classic details, with corner buildings from that period having a prominent appearance within the block structure of the neighborhood.
The natural stone frames and sills are striking, contrasting with the warm brickwork as light, refined lines. The detailing around the entrance underlines the representative character: a classic facade structure with a clear hierarchy, in which the ground floor functions as a solid plinth and the floors above have a more refined appearance. The roof also contributes to the character of the building, with a roof shape and dormer windows that give the façade a balanced silhouette and tie in with the architectural coherence of the street.

Living and cooking

In an apartment awaiting renovation, the second floor is characterized by a playful and spacious layout, with light and space taking center stage. The staircase leads to the spacious hall, which runs through the floor like a central axis and provides access to almost all rooms. Here you will find a separate toilet and various practical storage spaces.
At the front of the apartment is the spacious and very bright living room with many south-facing windows and high ceilings. The living room is spacious and consists of an en-suite, with the front section enjoying beautiful morning light and the living room facing south. Right on the corner is a small flower balcony overlooking both Pieter de Hoochstraat and Nicolaas Maesstraat. Next to the living room is a beautiful large kitchen. There are two separate studies at the beginning and end of the hallway on this floor. A floor where the fittings, architraves, and proportions give the home its cachet.
The combination of the corner location, the characteristic facade shape, and the possible layout make this floor a fully-fledged living space with a particularly spacious character and a pleasant balance between living, working, and cooking.

This is the house where I was born, where I grew up as a child, and where I later returned as an adult to become a mother myself.

My brothers also grew up here, and my mother continued to live here until the end of her life.

As a child, the large and bright living room seemed like a ballroom to me, and it is still ideal for celebrating the holidays in style or entertaining lots of friends. Thanks to the many large bedrooms always easily bedrooms people stay with us, so it was always a 'full house' at our place.

My mother thoroughly enjoyed the sun shining into the living room. She read her books there, played the piano, and received her visitors. Personally, I liked the upstairs room with its own kitchenette and shower best. The wooden floor and beautiful windows with authentic glass panes give the room a warm and elegant atmosphere. But actually, the whole house is full of beautiful authentic details, from the granite kitchen floor to the built-in china cabinet and the elegant banisters.

In summer, you can look Roof terrace over Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum from the Roof terrace , and on New Year's Eve, you can watch all the fireworks.

The location is ideal because you are so close to everything that makes Amsterdam special in terms of culture, shopping, and food: the Albert Cuyp Market, the Concertgebouw, the Museumplein, the Vondelpark, the Leidseplein, the P.C. Hooftstraat, etc. My personal favorites are the Italian delicatessen Renzo's on Van Baerlestraat, the Martyrium bookstore, and the Surinamese restaurant Albina on Albert Cuypstraat. Everything is less than a 5-minute walk away. I won't find that anywhere else anytime soon.

Café Loetje

In 1977, Café Loetje was established as a billiards café by Ludwig 'Loetje' Klinkhamer, but it wasn't long before they traded the billiards for the tenderloin steak that was served. More than forty years later, Loetje is a huge chain, and the original 'Café' is a household name in Amsterdam. The tasty steak is served with homemade fries and fresh gravy - it's finger-licking good!

La Dilettante

Owners Olivier von Grumbkow and Hans Vervoort opened the doors of La Dilettante. La Dilettante is open for lunch and wine. Snacks such as quiches, tarte tatins, patés and rillettes are served with the natural wines. One of those natural wines that the men pour is called La dilettante. That is not the only explanation for the chosen name. The word has several meanings. One of them is: someone who does something out of love.

The menu features street food such as pita falafel, hummus with warm chickpeas, and fresh pizzas, just like you would eat them in Israel.

L'Entrecôte et les Dames

L’Entrecôte et les Dames embraces the concept of a formula restaurant, as the French call it. Within an attractively decorated French brasserie, the entrecôte takes center stage, always lightly cooked 'bleu' from Maas-Rhein-IJssel cattle. This is served with fries and a refreshing salad. If you are still hungry afterwards, you will be served another portion. Prefer not to eat meat? As an alternative, they serve sole fried in butter with ravigotte sauce. Same formula and same price as the entrecôte menu.

Layers Bakery

Layers is a bakery and deli in Amsterdam, founded by French pastry chef Alexandre Scour, who translates his craftsmanship into a place where everything is built up layer by layer. In the mornings, the open pastry lab is in full swing, producing buttery croissants, viennoiserie, and patisserie that are made entirely in-house. In the afternoon, the focus shifts downstairs, where the deli serves fresh sandwiches with the same dedication to quality and detail. The concept revolves around unadorned craftsmanship, with food that is prepared with precision and attention.
