Design vision

Local authority developers agreed that Houthaven should become a 100% climate-neutral neighborhood. Houthaven has been built in an environmentally friendly manner, with extra attention paid to energy and material use. The name Narva refers to the Estonian Baltic Sea port of Narva, which was important for the timber trade with Amsterdam. Narva Island is connected to the two neighboring islands by bridges. The bridges and roads for fast traffic are perpendicular to the islands/streets, while the footbridges and cycle paths cut through the area at an angle. Each island in the Houthaven has its own theme; for Narva Island, this is 'Freebooters', which stands for freedom, happiness, and tolerance. According to the visual quality plan, the desired look was individual houses with a rich variety of buildings varying in grain size. The architect of the townhouses on Narva Island is the Klunder agency. These townhouses are substantial in size and feature a lot of decorative brickwork in the facade. Speckled bands, decorations in the form of diamonds and lozenges, brickwork in all shapes and sizes, color differences—everything has been done to make the street wall varied. The townhouses with meter-high vertical windows that split the facade are particularly monumental, which is unprecedented for most New build Amsterdam.

Living and cooking

The ground floor is a spacious living area, where cooking, eating, and relaxing come together. The kitchen is on the garden side and has a beautiful height of 3.40 m. The morning sun shines beautifully into this space. Large French doors connect the inside with the outside, allowing life to shift effortlessly outdoors in the summer. The kitchen itself is sleek and warm at the same time: white base cabinets with a ceramic worktop combined with light wood wall cabinets. The niche with the stove is lined with a stainless steel back wall, functional and stylish. Open shelves with books, spices, and ceramics create a homely atmosphere. The transition between cooking and living is marked by a subtle difference in height. Four steps higher is the seating area, facing the water. A second living room has been created on the first floor, a wonderful place to sit with a good book. This could also be a perfect playroom or bedroom.

The window at the end of the room provides a pleasant amount of natural daylight, keeping the room light and airy. Of course, this space is also ideal for use as a bedroom.
The bathroom on this floor is an elegant interplay of contrasts and tranquility. The warm, glossy brown tiles in the shower are from the exclusive Piet Boon design, beautifully combined with fresh white wall tiles that create a timeless and luxurious look. The double sink has a base cabinet with a high-quality wood veneer finish and offers generous storage space. A wide mirror cabinet completes the bathroom.
There are three bedrooms in the basement. At the rear are two Rooms, currently used as a guest room and a study. Thanks to the high ceilings and the natural light, these rooms are also light and spacious. The Rooms flexibly arranged and can grow with the wishes of the residents, whether for sleeping, working, or playing.
The layout of this floor is well thought out and functional. There is ample storage space, including a separate room for the washing machine and dryer, as well as two additional storage rooms. There is also a second bathroom here, equipped with a bathtub, a walk-in shower, and a spacious sink with plenty of storage space, designed in a timeless style.

Museum het Schip

Museum het Schip is a museum about the Amsterdam School; an art and architecture movement from the early 20th century. This movement is known for the strong housing ideals with which it is associated. The residential block in which the museum is located is perhaps just as special as the museum itself. The original post office in the building is special; the only post office in the Netherlands that has remained untouched since the 1920s. The elegant style of architect Michel de Klerk can be recognized throughout the building. In his designs, every detail has been considered.

The Ravestijn Gallery was founded in Amsterdam in 2012 by Jasper Bode and Narda Van 't Veer with a focus on exploratory and provocative approaches to contemporary photography. And they have succeeded in this. The gallery represents various national and international experimental artists who demonstrate the power of photography in all kinds of different ways. This modern approach to contemporary photography makes the exhibitions at De Ravestijn Gallery very interesting. But, in addition, the artworks are also a great aesthetic pleasure to look at and perhaps even a good source of inspiration for decorating a new home?

The Movies

The Movies cinema has been around since 1912. It is often called the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, but formally that is the Uitkijk cinema, which registered a year earlier. In its early years, the cinema was used as a small-scale neighborhood cinema, and only after the Second World War were films shown to a larger audience. Today, it is one of the most popular arthouse cinemas in Amsterdam. Many visitors also come to The Movies to admire the historic interior. The cinema is located in a 17th-century building on the Haarlemmerdijk and the original art-deco interior has been well preserved. A visit to this cinema feels like a journey through time.

Boon & de Koot

Following the success of Zoldering, chef Thomas Bron, wine importer Joost Clarijs, and sommeliers Job Seuren and Wout Jans opened Boon & de Koot, an accessible wine bar in the Zeeheldenbuurt neighborhood, without compromising on quality. The menu starts with hearty snacks such as oeuf mayo with roasted garlic and lovage, cleverly served so you can eat it in one bite. This is followed by refined starters such as raw sea bass with beurre noisette and calamansi or a coarse steak tartare with radicchio and anchovies. The real showstopper is the dish of roasted peas with tomatillo, olive, and egg yolk, a perfect interplay of smoke, freshness, and creaminess. Inside, there is a French bistro atmosphere, while outside, the terrace with marble tables and burgundy chairs invites you to linger for another glass.

Café Beurre is an accessible place where you are always welcome without a reservation. The restaurant has a preference for vegetables and butter, and does not use meat or fish in their dishes. The wine list is compiled by a former employee of Balthazar's Keuken and De Wijnwinkel, and offers a selection of French and Italian wines at decent prices. The restaurant also pays a lot of attention to aperitifs and serves a classic French snack of radish with homemade butter from organic farm De Beekhoeve.
