Architecture
Between 1927 and 1939, Michelangelostraat was built up with luxury residential complexes, mainly in the style of the late Amsterdam School and Nieuwe Bouwen. Jacques Bot, the architect behind Michelangelostraat, combined his passion for architecture with a political career at the time. Bot (Amsterdam, 1892) started as a carpenter's apprentice at the age of 12 and took evening classes at secondary school for architecture. In 1921, he established himself as an architect. Before World War II, he designed various housing complexes in the Art Deco and Amsterdam School traditions in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, and Utrecht. He also created stores for the Au Bon Marché chain. This led to the expressionist architectural style of the Amsterdam School, which focuses on external form and gives a solid, robust appearance. A characteristic element are the ladder windows: windows divided by a large number of muntins.
