What the residents will miss
"What we’ll miss most are the magnolia and the other trees in the garden, the little hedgehog scurrying through the garden on balmy summer evenings, the Bredeweg Festival around King’s Day, the Pure Market in Park Frankendael, and the storks that sometimes perch on the church tower, clattering their beaks. And above all, the house itself. It’s a wonderful place to live, where we’ve been very happy for 27 years!"

Neptunus
Neptunus is located in the sheltered Linnaeushof, a place with a distinct, almost village-like atmosphere within the city. The courtyard layout, the greenery, and the tranquil setting give this location its own unique character. The current residents have lived here since 1999. The home has been used extensively and carefully maintained during that time. Now that the children have left home, the house has become too spacious, prompting the decision to take the next step and move out of the city. The combination of the location, the dimensions, and the layout of the home makes Neptunus suitable for a household seeking space in a quiet and green residential environment.

Design vision

The house is part of a cohesive ensemble surrounding the Linnaeushof. The block was designed by A.J. Kropholler in 1931. The architecture follows the early Delft School style with influences from Berlage. The facades are constructed of brick with distinct bond patterns and recessed joints. The structure is solid and symmetrical, with high roofs and chimneys. The roofs are covered with red tiles and have a steep pitch. The front facade features a prominent entrance with a brick arch and a wooden front door. The bay window and the windows are set deep into the facade. This enhances the plasticity of the masonry. The front facade incorporates a tile panel depicting Neptune. This element references the theme of the courtyard and is characteristic of the ensemble. The rear facade is straight and functionally constructed. Large French doors on the ground floor connect the living space to the garden. The upper floors follow a regular window layout. The house has the status a municipal monument and is part of a protected urban complex.

What the owners will miss

The garden is absolutely lovely. We eat outside as soon as we can. The birds and the rustling of the trees make this place so special. Right in the heart of Amsterdam, yet so peaceful. An ideal spot to unwind after a day’s work or to spend time with friends and family. The small patio on the side of the house is perfect for enjoying the evening sun. In the spring, fall, and winter, the table by the kitchen is a regular gathering spot—whether with the kids, friends, or family. The open kitchen creates a pleasant atmosphere and a sense of togetherness. The house is a comfortable place to be, whether alone or with others. It’s spacious without feeling too big. We’ve also thoroughly enjoyed having lots of children in the house. The many bedrooms also bedrooms space for guests, young and old. The Linnaeushof is a rare place: a village within the big city. It is a beautiful architectural ensemble, with medieval accents from the Delft School. The large open Garden surrounding property historic church is particularly special. The courtyard is car-free, making it a fantastic environment for children to play outside. As soon as you leave the courtyard, you’re in a lively shopping street with all the amenities: a fishmonger, bakeries, and butcher shops. And a well-stocked bookstore. No fewer than 5 supermarkets are within walking distance. There are at least 4 elementary schools in the neighborhood and several high schools. Plus, plenty of sports facilities (the Jaap Edenbaan is nearby!).
There are restaurants in various price ranges, such as De Kas, Numero Zero, and Restaurant 1900.
The Merckelbach Garden is an excellent spot for lunch. Finally, there are excellent public transportation connections both into and out of the city. You can also quickly get out of the city by car or (racing) bike.
What we’ll really miss: The magnolia and the other trees in the garden, the little hedgehog scurrying through the garden on summer evenings, the Bredeweg Festival on King’s Day, the Puremarkt in Frankendael, the storks that sometimes clatter away on the church tower. And above all, the house itself. It’s a wonderful place to live, where we’ve been very happy for 27 years!

The well-known brown café on Middenweg opposite Park Frankendael has been a household name in Watergraafsmeer for decades. A real neighborhood café with good beer and satay and spare ribs on the menu. The beef sausage is a snack specialty at Elsa's. Fun fact: Elsa's stands for Elsa Maxwell, who was known in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s for the extravagant and lavish parties she organized. "The hostess with the mostest."

Since 2001, De Kas has been growing around 300 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and fruit in its own gardens. Its motto is "harvested in the morning, on your plate in the afternoon." The gardens in Amsterdam and Beemster are the heart and soul of the restaurant and its menu. They dictate the seasons and surprise us time and time again.  De Kas works with fixed menus. At lunch, you can choose between a 3- or 4-course menu, and for dinner, a 5- or 6-course menu. There is no à la carte, and the menu always features surprising, creative dishes prepared by chefs Wim de Beer and Jos Timmer. They now hold a 'normal' Michelin star and a green Michelin star.

Susy's Café

Café Susy was founded by Kick van Doorn and Nicole Lieuw, who previously opened the successful Yusu and wanted to show their love for authentic flavors once again with Susy. The name playfully refers to Yusu, but the mission is serious: an all-day café with a menu that doesn't follow trends but remains faithful to traditional Brazilian-Surinamese dishes. The kitchen focuses on familiar flavors such as Surinamese chicken satay, bami with long beans, and escondidinho with chicken, cassava purée, and cheese from the oven. Despite the trendy interior with lots of steel and clean lines, the kitchen remains deliberately unpolished and pure. The atmosphere is lively and accessible, a place where you can just as easily drop in for coffee as for a hearty, home-cooked meal.

Once inside, you could just as easily be sitting in an old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. For an escape from the city atmosphere, the Vergulden Eenhoorn is the perfect place, with good food and a wide range of drinks.

De Wit Butcher Shop

Slagerij de Wit has been a household name in Watergraafsmeer for over 35 years. As one of the few butchers in Amsterdam that slaughters its own meat, Slagerij de Wit is known for its quality, sausage-making, and culinary expertise. The meat is purchased Immediately the farmer, including local cows and Zuiderzee pigs. To ensure the quality of the products, an old-fashioned but sustainable way of working is maintained. Slagerij de Wit has been awarded for its ox sausage, which is a very tasty sandwich, but their homemade meatball sandwich is also highly recommended.

Olives & More

The owners tasted delicious olives in many countries, but back in Amsterdam, they could hardly find them. That's why they now import directly from the farmer. It started with a few wooden barrels full of olives in a baker's cargo bike at a farmers market in Amsterdam. Olives & More now imports dozens of types of olives and olive oil from Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Portugal.

The Kaaf

The men behind restaurant De Tros and its sister restaurant Turbo opened their own wine shop in East Amsterdam, called Wijnwinkel de Tros, also known as De Kaaf. Here, they bring the same love for natural wine that characterizes their restaurants to a place where you can just walk in and take something beautiful home with you. The shelves are filled with carefully selected bottles, from pet nat to champagne and from red to white and orange. For those who know De Tros, De Kaaf feels like a logical extension: the same taste, but in store form. In addition, the space can also be rented for tastings and private evenings, making De Kaaf as much a meeting place as a store.

Framer Framed

The project Framed project started in 2009 with the aim of challenging the position of transcultural art in Dutch art institutions. This was done through a traveling program visiting Dutch museums, where critical exhibition analyses were organized. Today, they have a permanent exhibition space, where changing contemporary art exhibitions are shown in combination with an in-depth interdisciplinary public program consisting of artist talks, lectures, film screenings, and performances.
