The Koopmanshuis on the Canal
Living on the canal is the ultimate Amsterdam experience for me. Waking up, opening the curtains, and enjoying the view of the canal and the bustling Leidsestraat—that is pure enjoyment. This apartment is in a prime location, sandwiched between the Spiegelgracht and the Museum Quarter with its many galleries and museums, and on the other side the cozy Jordaan and the 9 Straatjes, known for their unique shops, the lively Noordermarkt, and numerous excellent restaurants. Thanks to its central location, the whole city is within easy reach.
The apartment is located on the top floor of a stately building. Upon entering, you are welcomed into a beautiful, historic communal hall with original ornaments. I also like the combination of the classic building and the modern apartment. The atmosphere of the apartment is very pleasant; it is a spacious apartment with lots of windows, high ceilings, and light. It has a good and spacious layout, a large living room with an open kitchen at the front with a beautiful view of the canal, the master bedroom at the quiet rear with an en-suite bathroom and access to the Roof terrace. A second spacious bedroom located on the mezzanine and a separate laundry room.

Around 1740, amid Amsterdam's flourishing trade and growing prestige, a stately merchant's house was built on one of the canals. With a facade width of 7.54 meters, it was a building that stood out not only for its size, but also for its solid foundations, carefully laid by Mr. Nicolaes Benedictus Ingels. The first stone marked the beginning of a house that would remain a symbol of merchant success for generations to come. Simon Storm completed the construction, finishing the building with craftsmanship and precision and giving it its first appearance.
More than half a century later, the house was given a new, more refined look. The façade was crowned with a straight cornice, supported by four imposing consoles between which elegant transoms were placed. Once upon a time, a balustrade with elegant corner vases adorned the roof, a sign of the grandeur that the owner wanted to radiate. The windows were designed in the Empire style, in keeping with the fashion of the time. A stately staircase led to the raised entrance, while a separate lower entrance provided access to the basement. The entrance itself was embellished with a beautifully framed door, inviting visitors into a house where commerce and prosperity came together.
At the end of the 18th century, the house underwent another subtle but refined change. A transom window was placed above the entrance. The façade retained its cornice with a slightly protruding central bay, while the straight cornice with the four consoles emphasized the stately appearance of the building. Over the centuries, this house remained a silent witness to the changes in the city. Traders came and went, fashions and styles changed, but the foundations once laid by Ingels remained. Today, it is a reminder of the grandeur of yesteryear, a piece of living heritage that still breathes the soul of Amsterdam.
