The Achterhuis Hospitium
When I advised the current owners on the purchase of their home, it was an adventure with a surprise. Access to the house is unorthodox: via a beautiful entrance, a hallway, and a green courtyard garden. And then the surprise of a beautiful white, classic facade that exudes romance and grandeur. One of the hidden gems in the courtyards on the canal belt, from another period of prosperity and under the influence of the French era. In my opinion, this rear house could also have been located in Paris or Lyon in a courtyard. My clients fell in love with it instantly. And rightly so. Living here is a privilege and an experience of tranquility and history. A unique place, as they say, but then really.

Architecture
A rear section of a canal house. The archives date back to 1887, when the rear section at that time had to be renovated to accommodate the Foundation for Higher Education with a Reformed Basis, the predecessor of the Vrije Universiteit. The rear section was then renovated as part of Keizersgracht 162, 164, and 166, which was also connected to the Prinsengracht. The current layout and facade of the building largely date from 1887. Until the 1970s, the complex, of which the rear section was a part, was used by the Vrije Universiteit. After that, it was used by the Salvation Army and served as accommodation for single, unemployed men. The building was intended for retirement. In the 1980s, the building was vacated and Number was converted into residences. When the current owners bought it, it was already inhabited. They modernized and renovated it. The beautiful classic facade with attractive window divisions and plasterwork is striking. Together with the vegetation, it has a romantic appearance. The internal staircase is also from this period.

Entrance and parking
The property is accessible via the entrance on Keizersgracht in the canal house, as well as via Prinsengracht. The main entrance is representative and makes it easy to approach or leave the property from Keizersgracht. The back entrance via Prinsengracht is convenient for bicycles, which can be parked in the alley. This also provides easy access to the Jordaan and Noordermarkt neighborhoods, which is quite unique.
In addition to a parking permit on the public road, there is the option of renting one or two parking spaces. These garage spaces are located on Langestraat and are within walking distance.

Living and cooking
With a lovely kitchen on the ground floor, featuring double doors opening onto the garden, this is one of the owners' favorite spaces. This is where everyone comes together, where large groups can eat, and where the garden becomes part of the whole. The atmosphere of the kitchen fits perfectly with the house, with marble tiles on the floor and a large stove that would fit right into a French kitchen. The black fireplace is an object that matches the shelves above the countertop. A long countertop offers space for extensive cooking. The countertop has a large, eye-catching sink with a semi-professional faucet and a Quooker. In the center, there is space for a large, long dining table. There is also space for a play corner or a sitting area with a desk. On the first floor is a separate spacious living room. With beautiful French oak and robust floors, the fireplace completes the atmosphere. Three large windows offer a view of the garden. The room is so spacious that a separate study corner or extra room can easily be separated in a separate area.

With marble flooring and a playful layout, the bathroom surprises with a bathtub positioned diagonally across the room. In addition, the bathroom has a spacious walk-in shower, a toilet, bidet, and double sink. The upper floor can be reached via a beautiful and classic staircase. This floor has a spacious and bright landing. There is also space for washing and drying here, and the boiler room is located here. There are two children's bedrooms and a bathroom on this floor. The garden
The garden is one of the most important assets. Surrounded by greenery and sunshine, the garden is a peaceful and safe place in the city. Thanks to the greenery and ivy, among other things, the garden has the atmosphere of a courtyard garden that could just as easily be found in Paris or Lyon. The garden is also part of the entrance and, with its French doors, is also part of the living space on the ground floor. The owners have always considered the garden to be one of the best features of the house.

What the residents will miss
Living in the center of Amsterdam, yet tucked away from the hustle and bustle. No tourists peering into your home. When you open the door to the courtyard garden from the hallway, you immediately see something special: a spacious and charming courtyard garden with a rich Amsterdam history. Large windows with beautiful light and a high ceiling with a wide facade give this house a very spacious, light, and open feeling.
The large living room has French doors to the ground-level garden with bronze lanterns, old cobblestones, and many trees that are always in bloom. The Japanese cherry tree, the wisteria, or the hazelnut tree that scatters a large amount of fresh hazelnuts every September. A garden that has sun from morning to evening and is perfect for BBQ parties and evening drinks, and pets running free, with a view of the iconic Westertoren.
A delightful house with nice playgrounds and good schools within walking distance. Delicious restaurants and cozy cafes around the corner. In short, a quiet oasis in a bustling neighborhood.

Christiaan Smit is an intimate restaurant in the Jordaan, located at Prinsenstraat 20 in Amsterdam. It offers a 4- or 5-course dinner, with the option to order à la carte. Under the direction of chef Simon van Lith, the focus is on seasonal dishes with meat, fish, and local products, such as langoustines and dry-aged fish. Sommelier Abel van Schoonhoven provides accompanying wines. The interior, inspired by English pubs, exudes comfort and conviviality. Eatery De Reiger

Eetcafé De Reiger in the Jordaan neighborhood is still that neighborhood café where you can easily pop in for a good meal and a nice glass of wine, but behind the scenes, something has changed. Since 2025, De Reiger has been run by the same entrepreneurs you may know from Entrepot, Metro, and De Druif: young hospitality entrepreneurs with a keen eye for atmosphere, simplicity, and quality. They haven't changed much about the café; the wooden floor still creaks like it used to, and the Amstel signs are deliberately hung upside down, but in the kitchen, just that little bit of extra attention has been added. Think simple but well-prepared classics at a reasonable price and always something tasty on tap. A café where the past is cherished, but where the future is served up at the table.

Linguini

Simplicity is essential in Italian cuisine: as long as the ingredients are good, you don't need much. “Less is more”. They understand that well at Linguini in the Herenstraat. The interior exudes the Italian dolce vita feeling: attractive old tiles and a beautiful long sofa as an eye-catcher: Linguini is a cozy and warm trattoria, with attention to detail. The menu is small and mainly consists of pasta. You can order this either in a small portion (for one person), or in Italian style in a large pan for the ‘famiglia’. So, pasta, pasta, pasta. All prepared with love and passion by the Italian ‘pasta maestro’ named Lorenzo Isidoro.
