De Schoone Dame
This former stately bank has been converted into luxury apartments. It was one of the first developments to feature a caretaker, a swimming pool, and an Immediately parking garage. The complex stretches from Herengracht to Singel and is divided into two Homeowners' Associations (VvE's). Thanks to its grand design and central location, it is a popular complex in Amsterdam's city center. The residents are people who enjoy city life and appreciate the comfort and security it offers.
I find redevelopment projects interesting. Old construction drawings show that there was a large vault under the former trading floor, completely surrounded by control corridors. A panoramic elevator has now been installed in this space, while the wide staircases have been retained. It is one of the most spectacular entrances in the city. The fact that not many transactions take place in the building is a sign to me that the residents enjoy living there. Who will succeed the current resident will become clear in the near future.

Architecture
The bank building, constructed between 1900 and 1902 for the Associatie Cassa and designed by architect C.B. Posthumus Meyjes, is a remarkable example of Art Nouveau with Berlagian influences. This architectural masterpiece, with a parallelogram-shaped floor plan, comprises a basement, two floors, and a mezzanine under a transverse gable roof with gray-blue slates. The facade, constructed of hard stone and tuff, has seven bays with a central entrance flanked by wide bays and ending in a tower-shaped corner bay. A series of natural stone bollards with decorative wrought-iron fencing adorns the front.
The building is characterized by rich decorative elements, including a varied window design with latticework, segmental arches supported by polished columns, and an elaborate aedicula above the entrance. The gables are enriched with floral motifs and date inscriptions, while the interior features a striking staircase with an original wooden banister, decorative wrought-iron fencing, stained-glass windows, and tesserae and terrazzo floors. Plastered panels, geometric tiling, and marble floors complete the rich interior, emphasized by a remarkable spiral staircase.
In 1995/1996, the building was converted into a luxury apartment complex with parking. The remarkable monumental hall, with a height of approximately five meters, provides access to the concierge desk, the atrium, and the apartments.

The living room features a suede-covered wall with a gas fireplace and built-in television. The large white corner sofa is positioned to make the most of the afternoon light and the warmth of the gas fireplace. Marcel Wolterinck's team discussed every detail with the owner and carefully selected and designed everything.
The kitchen, which can be closed off with doors, has the work, sink, and cooking areas on one side and built-in appliances such as an oven, microwave, coffee machine, and refrigerator on the other. Amsterdam was introduced to the essence of Italian cuisine. According to owner Mazziotta, it is all about the beauty of simplicity: few ingredients, but of high quality. At Caldi e Freddi, the essence is the same: simple and affordable. No complicated dishes, but accessibility and low prices. They take what is easy and affordable from Italian cuisine, such as chicken instead of lamb. Enjoy delicious sandwiches (also vegetarian options) and other authentic Italian dishes and desserts, all to take away.

Linguini

Simplicity is essential in Italian cuisine: as long as the ingredients are good, you don't need much. “Less is more”. They understand that well at Linguini in the Herenstraat. The interior exudes the Italian dolce vita feeling: attractive old tiles and a beautiful long sofa as an eye-catcher: Linguini is a cozy and warm trattoria, with attention to detail. The menu is small and mainly consists of pasta. You can order this either in a small portion (for one person), or in Italian style in a large pan for the ‘famiglia’. So, pasta, pasta, pasta. All prepared with love and passion by the Italian ‘pasta maestro’ named Lorenzo Isidoro.

Eatery De Reiger

Eetcafé De Reiger in the Jordaan neighborhood is still that neighborhood café where you can easily pop in for a good meal and a nice glass of wine, but behind the scenes, something has changed. Since 2025, De Reiger has been run by the same entrepreneurs you may know from Entrepot, Metro, and De Druif: young hospitality entrepreneurs with a keen eye for atmosphere, simplicity, and quality. They haven't changed much about the café; the wooden floor still creaks like it used to, and the Amstel signs are deliberately hung upside down, but in the kitchen, just that little bit of extra attention has been added. Think simple but well-prepared classics at a reasonable price and always something tasty on tap. A café where the past is cherished, but where the future is served up at the table.
