Neighborhood Guide The Jordaan was originally a typical working-class neighborhood, home to many artisans and small businesses. Many old garages and shops have been converted into living spaces. There are also many narrow streets with narrow houses. The canals are named after flowers. It is a pleasant neighborhood to live in, with a fascinating piece of history. This lively neighborhood has a very rich and diverse range of amenities, such as the Nine Streets, many galleries, coffee bars, cafes, restaurants, and various supermarkets. On every corner, you can find a refined or unique shop. The mix of craftsmanship and trendy hotspots makes the neighborhood so popular. There are several markets. Every Saturday, the Lindengracht and the Noordermarkt come to life with a lively organic market. On Monday mornings, there is the famous fabric market in the Westerstraat. The neighborhood also has some nice playgrounds, such as the hidden playground on the Slootstraat. The Noorderspeeltuin and the one on Tweede Looiersdwarsstraat are also favorites. This beloved neighborhood offers a good selection of elementary schools, such as the Theo Thijssenschool, the 14de Montessorischool, and De Burght.

De Goudsbloem
As an agency, we assist with the sale of a wide range of properties. As a real estate agent, this variety is very challenging and contributes to the picture you get of the overall housing market in Amsterdam. Personally, I have a soft spot for the Jordaan, where I worked for a long time at another agency. This has given me a better understanding and appreciation of the neighborhood. The neighborhood has a very pleasant dynamic and good amenities. Haarlemmerstraat, Westerstraat, and numerous side streets offer a diversity of shops, specialty stores, and caterers. There are also several good restaurants and cozy cafés in the neighborhood. The apartment at Eerste Goudsbloemdwarsstraat 15 A3, which our office has the privilege of selling, is a unique double upper floor apartment located in the city center. The potential buyer can enjoy a modern 3-room apartment with a contemporary character. What makes it special is that you are a stone's throw away from the city's dynamism, but experience an oasis of tranquility in the home. If you are interested, I would like to invite you to come and take a look. I will, of course, tell you more about the apartment. Perhaps we will see you soon.

Architecture

The building originally dates from 1890, but was demolished and rebuilt in 1934. Over time, various renovations were carried out on the shell of the building. First, the foundation was repaired in 1996, followed by the installation of two dormer windows on the attic floor in 2008, and the roof conservatories in 2021. The building itself has a characteristic stepped gable, an architectural feature that was used for both functional and decorative purposes at the time. These facades, often built with red bricks, exude the charm and craftsmanship of the Dutch Renaissance. The hoisting beam and decorative anchors on the facade are a characteristic element. These wrought-iron constructions of the decorative anchors were used to reinforce the walls, but at the same time they contribute to the aesthetic appearance of the building. The symmetrical windows with white-framed window frames and the subtle use of yellow accents in the bricks add a refined harmony to the whole. This type of facade is an authentic representation of the practical and stylish architecture that has made Amsterdam famous worldwide. It tells the story of a city that not only had to build functionally, but also had an eye for elegance and Sustainability.

What the owners will miss

Four years ago, we found this magical house in the Jordaan neighborhood, and from the very first moment, we knew: this is it. An oasis of calm in the middle of a lively neighborhood. What Immediately us was the light: it flows in from all four directions and constantly offers new views. Whether we look out over the characteristic Jordaan rooftops, the stately Noorderkerk, the Posthoornkerk, or the A'DAM Tower in the distance, it never gets boring. Our house is fortunate to have unobstructed views on all sides. The icing on the cake is the future construction of the balcony, which we will unfortunately miss. As running enthusiasts, we will miss the proximity of Westerpark; it is only 800 meters from the front door to the entrance. In this unique location, the city feels close by, but at the same time wonderfully far away. We have enjoyed everything that makes this house so special. The soft patter of rain on the sloping roof, lulling us to sleep. The atmosphere of the neighborhood, where we are Immediately immersed Immediately the bustling life of the Jordaan district. With favorite spots such as Café Thijssen, De Linden, and Toscanini literally around the corner, and the Noordermarkt on Saturdays as a regular ritual, we have always thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here. It is a house and a neighborhood that we have taken into our hearts. Moving was not actually planned at all. We are incredibly happy in our home. But then an unexpected opportunity came along: a corner house in an old telephone exchange, which we immediately fell in love with. And so, with a heavy heart, we decided to let go of this special house. It is full of beautiful memories, and we hope that the new residents will enjoy this unique place as much as we have.

At the beginning you will immediately find the delicious fish stall (the kibbeling or the tuna salad sandwich are recommended!) The Oil Shop

In 2016, the Oliewinkel (Oil Shop) opened on the Brouwersgracht. The Oliewinkel is the place for those who love good food and quality products. The range consists mainly of Mediterranean products, but the emphasis is on olive oil from small producers in Italy, Spain, Greece and France. In the store, you can taste the oil so that you can choose the tastiest one yourself and take it with you in a glass bottle that you can have refilled.
Also, the rest of the range has been carefully selected. In addition to various delicious homemade pestos, tapenades and vinaigrettes, you will find, for example, fantastic mustard from the Netherlands, Belgium and France on the shelves.
The Oliewinkel also has several types of olives, fantastic pickles and the tastiest mayonnaises and vinaigrettes in stock. In the middle of the store is a table full of canned fish. In particular, the preserves of the Spanish brand Ortiz are well represented.

Louman Butcher Shop

Louman Butcher's has been a household name in Amsterdam and the surrounding area since 1890. In addition to many regular local customers, many people from outside the city come especially to Slagerij Louman for a piece of meat, other meat products, or a traditionally prepared sausage. The butcher shop has been in the family for three generations, and with good reason. In the heart of the Jordaan, you can come here for quality, craftsmanship, and the most delicious meatballs.

Noordermarkt

You can shop on the cozy Noordermarkt on Monday morning and Saturday. Originally, the Noordermarkt was a pots, pans and patches market, where people in the 17th century mainly bought everyday objects. Today you can buy everything such as antiques, jewelry, paintings, glass and crockery, books and prints and lots of vintage clothing. On Saturday morning there is also an organic market where you can buy fresh organic vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese, herbs, fish, honey and many other products. The market people are sometimes still true Amsterdammers with a strong accent and a board full of corny humor. You won't find such a variety of products at any other market in Amsterdam; the market has so much to offer that you can easily stroll around for a whole day.

A combination of a brown cafe and a restaurant. That was the starting point of Natalie Kouwen and Tim Werners. Inside or outside on the Lindegracht in the middle of the Jordaan, you can enjoy, among other things, homemade fried sausage with piccalilly, celeriac with salsa verde or a braised rabbit leg.

Saint Jean recently opened in the Jordaan neighborhood. When owner Yann Pierre-Jean switched to a plant-based diet, he was very disappointed with the flavors of vegan pastries. He decided to start baking at home and selling his creations. This grew into his own plant-based bakery and specialty coffee shop. It's always busy, but if you arrive early, you can score one of their signature cruffins, filled with a homemade pistachio cream that is divine.

Pompon

For more than 30 years, the florists of Pompon have been making custom-made bouquets. Not just any bouquets, but from the most beautiful artificial flowers. They put the "art" in artificial flowers and create arrangements that are so realistic that you almost forget that they last forever. In addition to the beautiful bouquets, you can also find a diverse range of unique vases here.
