The Van der Schaarhuys
Some residences out because of their appearance, others because of their location—and occasionally, everything comes together. In my opinion, De Lairessestraat 77 is one such house. A family home with character, grandeur, and refinement. Where the classic exterior from 1917 seamlessly transitions into an interior that has been reinterpreted with vision and a sense of style. What Immediately me upon entering was the natural balance between space and intimacy, but especially the central hall with the staircase. The kitchen is open and inviting, while the living room with its bay window offers a sense of security. Each floor is thoughtfully laid out, with a master bedroom that feels like a private retreat and an upper floor that adapts smoothly to living, working, or staying. Even the basement is fully utilized—with light, comfort, and its own bathroom. The garden and Roof terrace this house. Sun, privacy, and freedom, right in the middle of Zuid—I think that's why people want to live in this house. And then there's the possibility of further expansion, to a living area of approximately 400 m². That makes this house not only special to live in, but also future-proof. I am confidently guiding this house through the sales process. It is a place to stay for a long time.

This spacious family home with a classic facade rich in detail is located on the wide, stylish De Lairessestraat in Amsterdam-Zuid. De Lairessestraat in Amsterdam-Zuid was named in 1912 after the 17th-century painter Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711), who moved to Amsterdam from Liège in 1667. The block of buildings of which the house is a part dates from around 1917 and is part of the protected cityscape. It has an environmental permit for expansion, which means that the living area can be increased to approximately 400 m². The house was completely renovated in 2015 and refurbished in 2022 to a design by interior architect Marina van Goor of MVGCA. A combination of original grandeur, contemporary luxury, and refined finishes come together harmoniously here. Built in 1917 using a construction method that was modern for its time, concrete was used for the basement and foundation. This gave these buildings a more solid foundation than houses with traditional pile foundations. Builder, real estate agent, and architect H. van der Schaar was the client and designer at the time. He designed a beautiful ensemble of stylish "mansions," of which this house was a part. It is striking that the buildings appear to be identical, yet differ in width. No. 77 is one of the wider buildings. The entrance door and bay windows are striking design details that define the appearance of the façade. This atmosphere and character has been carried through to the interior and is still recognizable today.
The kitchen-diner forms the central hub of the ground floor. High ceilings with decorative moldings, wide oak herringbone floors, and an open-plan layout provide light and connection. The kitchen is a Dada kitchen, designed by Vincent van Duysen, and renovated in 2022. The kitchen is fully equipped with high-quality Gaggenau appliances, such as a flex induction hob with integrated extractor, a Vario refrigerator and fridge-freezer, an oven, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, and a Quooker—all integrated into the design. The style of the kitchen is characterized by dark walnut wood, a choice of material that is continued in the cupboard wall and the desk in the office and cloakroom at the front of the house. The combination of the natural stone worktop with the adjacent wooden dining area emphasizes the refinement. The kitchen is the central point in the house. Next to the kitchen is a spacious dining room, which also opens onto the garden. The kitchen has a fantastic large window facing the garden. The en-suite wardrobes give the adjacent living room its own intimacy. Steel doors with glass connect the kitchen to the hall. At the front, the sitting room with bay window, fireplace, and wooden floor has its own intimate character. Here, the historic soul of the house comes to life in combination with contemporary comfort and warmth. In the front room, the decorative stucco ceiling has been restored.
The master bedroom on the first floor features a spacious dressing room and a luxurious bathroom with a walk-in shower, freestanding bathtub, a generous custom-made double sink unit, and toilet. The master bedroom offers the luxury and comfort of a boutique hotel. Quietly located on the south side, the bathroom exudes understated and timeless luxury. The bathroom is finished with tiles by Piet Boon (Douglas & Jones), a bathtub by Cocoon, custom bathroom furniture in Consentino-Silestone, and stainless steel faucets by Hotbath. The walk-in closet has over ten meters of storage space. The rooms are connected to a spacious and light hallway, with the staircase from downstairs offering grandeur. At the front are two spacious bedrooms, connected via an en-suite. This floor also has a second bathroom and a separate toilet. The second bathroom is also finished with Piet Boon tiles (Douglas & Jones), custom-made washbasin furniture in Consentino-Silestone, and Hotbath stainless steel faucets, entirely in line with the refined style and high-quality finish of the main bathroom. The second floor offers a versatile loft space with a ceiling height of over five meters, a guest room, a third bathroom on the mezzanine with the same Piet Boon tiles, a kitchenette, and a separate toilet. This floor is ideal for guests, working from home, or sports and relaxation. The staircase to the basement leads to a spacious hall with built-in cupboards and gives access to a multifunctional room with natural light and built-in cupboards, perfect as a study, studio, or guest room. On the other side of the hall is the utility room, a bathroom with a walk-in shower and toilet. Behind it is another room ideal as a laundry room, hobby room, storage room, or wine cellar. The basement is also very suitable as a separate room for an au pair.
The Rear garden south and Rear garden directly connected to the kitchen and dining room. The garden is surrounded by lush greenery and is open to the west, making it exceptionally light. The garden will be redesigned in 2022 with trees and perennials, a sprinkler system, and atmospheric lighting. There is sun throughout the day, but there is also always a spot in the shade. Upstairs, on the second floor, there is a spacious and sheltered Roof terrace approximately 50 m², also facing south. This outdoor space offers plenty of sun, peace, and privacy—a special quality in the middle of the city.

What makes this house so special to us? The wonderful light, the spacious staircase, and the tranquility you feel as soon as you step inside. Despite its central location, when you're in the garden or on the Roof terrace , it Roof terrace you've completely escaped the city. We don't have one favorite spot in the house—it really depends on the time of day. Breakfast at the kitchen island, drinks at the dining table, coffee in the garden as soon as the sun comes out. And on warm evenings: barbecuing on the Roof terrace. These are all places where you love to linger. The neighborhood also has something really special. Everything is close by. We can walk or cycle to the Concertgebouw, the Vondelpark, or one of the museums. And for a spontaneous night out, Restaurant Schotsheuvel is our regular spot — just walk in without a reservation, which is ideal. What will we miss the most? The smell of fresh bread from Van Vessem in the morning and the luxury of a gym just a stone's throw away. But above all, the rhythm that this house and this place gave us — a nice balance between city and tranquility, lively and relaxed.
