The Wide and Open-
What I believe makes this home unique is the complete sense of openness, multiple terraces, and views of the Obrechtkerk, with no neighbors above. There are few apartments in Amsterdam Zuid that are part of a building with an elevator, parking, and the privilege of the top floor. Furthermore, there are only a handful of penthouses that span a single floor and feature a Roof terrace over 150 square meters. This combination of luxury is rare and offers a special living experience that commands a premium.
The complex is well-known for its involvement in the development and previous transactions, in which its added value compared to other attractive offerings is consistently recognized.
This quality is evident in both the details and the big picture: access to all amenities is barrier-free, the finishes stand out in design and execution, and the concept has been carefully thought out.
The building and the home offer more: higher quality and even a certain degree of intimacy. Here, luxury is experienced in a understated way. That is the essence of true elegance.

Design vision

De Banstraat 5 has a rich history that forms the foundation for today’s living experience. Originally, a girls’ school stood on this site, later replaced by a modernist office building designed by architect Zandstra. After the social services department moved out in 2008, the building was redeveloped into an exclusive and sustainable apartment complex.
Designed by MVSA, in collaboration with Roberto Meyer, the building has been transformed into a refined whole that preserves the original concrete structure, resulting in a low carbon footprint. Combined with a thermal energy storage system, this creates a future-proof residential building.
The architecture is distinguished by a striking façade composition featuring glass, ceramic panels in a deep burgundy hue, and refined stainless steel details. Bay windows, loggias, and vertical lines ensure a balanced connection to the surroundings. This attention to detail continues into the entrance, where mahogany, Belgian bluestone, and steel come together to create a understated yet high-quality reception area.
The addition of an extra floor creates space for two penthouses, including “The Wide and Open,” with extra height, light, and outdoor space. The flexible column structure allows for a well-thought-out layout, with light and spaciousness at its core.
The entire project is characterized by consistency, material selection, and a clear design vision, resulting in a building of lasting quality and value.

Living and cooking

The living area is spacious, yet still offers a sense of intimacy with three separate rooms, each serving a distinct purpose. First is a kitchen-diner that is fully equipped with every conceivable semi-professional appliance and offers the opportunity to enjoy drinks and meals with family and guests at a spacious kitchen island. Thanks to the kitchen’s southwest orientation and its location adjacent to one of the terraces, this is a pleasant spot bathed in afternoon and evening sun. The kitchen itself is equipped with a Wolff stove, a Gaggenau refrigerator, a double wine cooler, and additional appliances, including a steam oven. The kitchen features mahogany, stainless steel, and Belgian bluestone finishes and includes a gas fireplace for extra ambiance in the evening.
The living area comprises a spacious, approximately 44 m² lounge adjacent to the formal dining room. The living room features an oak floor and a large fireplace with a classic mantelpiece as its focal point. Built-in cabinets and shelves are custom-made. The connection to the kitchen, entryway, and dining room is formed by glass doors with bronze-finished mullions, which can be opened or closed.
The formal dining room is located at the rear and also adjoins a large terrace. From here, diners can enjoy the view of the greenery, the church, and the illuminated stained-glass windows.
All rooms are connected to the central hall and feature double doors positioned opposite each other on a single axis, creating beautiful sightlines.

Roof garden and terraces

The “Wide and Open” feeling is further enhanced by multiple terraces and a rooftop garden spanning approximately 150 m².
Three pleasant terraces adjoin the kitchen-diner, living room, and master bedrooms. These flow seamlessly into one another on the ground floor, enhancing the enjoyment of living here. The terrace on the southwest side is partially covered with louvers. Thanks to its location, this terrace enjoys the sun until sunset. The two terraces at the rear are situated peacefully next to the courtyard garden and offer a magnificent view of the Obrecht Church.
The terraces are finished with natural stone and integrated planters and feature stainless steel design railings in some areas. Accessible via sliding doors and walk-through doors, the terraces offer ample space for a dining table.
A special feature is the rooftop garden, which is accessible via a beautiful staircase and offers plenty of privacy. Surrounded by greenery and playfully arranged decks, it creates a sunny oasis in the city. From this spot, the view stretches across Amsterdam Zuid, with a view of the Zuidas, the green roof of Vondelpark, and various church towers, including the Westertoren in the city center. With herb planters and ornamental grasses, this outdoor space is a pleasant place to relax. An outdoor shower provides a refreshing break, and preparations have been made for installing a jacuzzi.
The terrace is ideal for entertaining guests and is a valuable addition to the overall living experience.

De Wijnkaart

De Wijnkaart is located in the Museum Quarter in Amsterdam-Zuid. All kinds of wines from the forgotten Eastern European wine countries are served here. Although the history of wine making started here, these countries are often forgotten in the wine world. If you have become curious about all kinds of wines, you can do a wine tasting in the wine bar, where you can choose which ones you want to taste. In addition to the appetizer platters that change weekly, there are also main courses on the menu.
