A Look Inside: Architect Elwin van Heyningen
As an architect, what did you notice right away about this house?
What immediately stood out about this house was the abundance of windows, which let in beautiful natural light and offered stunning views. We could see right away just how much potential this house had. Thanks to its unique location, it’s shaped a bit like the Flatiron Building. When you stand at the tip of the house, you can watch both the sunrise and the sunset, accompanied by the beautiful morning and evening colors.
What is the difference between your experience as a resident and as an architect?
To be honest, there’s no difference for me. I’m very sensitive to aesthetics, so if something looks beautiful, it makes me feel calm and happy. But at the same time, the pleasure of a space comes not only from aesthetics but also from its functionality, acoustics, tactile qualities, natural light, and the way it flows. A space that looks stunning in a photo might not feel right in real life. For example, it’s also important that you can lie “sheltered” on the couch without having to see the mess in the kitchen. That brings just as much joy as a photogenic image.
How did you approach the layout and flow of the house?
The biggest challenge was deciding where to place the staircase. We wanted to keep the living area as open as possible, so we opted for a sleek, airy spiral staircase that runs in one continuous flight from the living area through the bedroom level up to the Roof terrace. We immediately envisioned how beautiful a round table would look in front of the balcony at the tip of the house. This created a natural division between the sitting area and the kitchen. From the kitchen, you have a lovely view of the water and can enjoy the evening sun. The sitting area is cozy and more secluded.
What is your favorite spot in the house?
I find this a really tough question because there are so many different favorite spots. When we have friends over, everyone always hangs out in the kitchen and on the wide windowsill that we had built in along the entire length of the house. When it’s just the two of us, it’s wonderful to relax on the couch in the evening and watch the hustle and bustle on Clercqstraat. Because of the house’s location, you can see the entire length of Clercqstraat from the couch, almost all the way to Admiraal de Ruijterweg. With its low ceiling and skylights, the upstairs bedroom feels very cozy and luxurious, like a small hotel room within our own home.
What role does the neighborhood play in making you feel at home?
We immediately felt at home in this neighborhood. Before this, we lived in the heart of downtown for three years, where everything was much more impersonal and geared toward tourists. Here, we immediately struck up friendly conversations with our neighbors, and the local amenities are more geared toward residents. Just a stone’s throw away, there are countless great restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops. And from here, we can easily walk to both Vondelpark and the Jordaan.
Neighborhood guide
The Da Costa neighborhood is a lively area in Amsterdam-West where the character of Oud-West meets the energy of the city. De Clercqstraat serves as a bustling thoroughfare lined with cafés, specialty shops, and restaurants that give the neighborhood a distinctly urban vibe. At the same time, the Jordaan is literally just around the corner, putting its charming canals, narrow streets, and artisanal shops within easy reach.
