Design vision

The line of sight extends across the entire width of the space, keeping the various functions—living and dining—visually connected.
The existing structure has been partially left exposed. Wooden beams in the ceiling create rhythm and give the space a clear structure. The finish is understated, with calm walls and a continuous wooden floor that connects the different zones.
The internal spiral staircase forms a central element within the home. The slender steel structure connects the floors without disrupting the openness of the space. Thanks to the transparent design, sightlines remain intact and the connection between the levels is preserved.
On the top floor, the spatial experience changes. Under the roof, sloping roof surfaces and built-in cabinets create a more private layout. The spaces are functionally organized around the landing, with a clear separation between sleeping and bathing areas.
The whole can be described as a balanced combination of original architecture and contemporary interventions, with light, sightlines, and functionality guiding the design of the home.

What the owners will miss

As an architect, what did you notice right away about this house?
What immediately stood out in this house were the many windows, which let in beautiful natural light and
offered a stunning view. We immediately saw how much potential this house had. Because of its unique location
it’s shaped a bit like the Flatiron Building. When you stand at the tip of the house
you can see both the sunrise and the sunset with the beautiful morning and
evening colors that go with them.

How did you approach the layout and flow of the house?
The biggest challenge was deciding where to place the staircase. We wanted to keep the living area as open
as possible, so we opted for a steel, airy spiral staircase that runs in one continuous
line from the living area through the bedroom level up to the Roof terrace. We immediately envisioned
how beautiful a round table would look in front of the balcony at the tip of the
home. This immediately created a natural division between the sitting area and the
kitchen. From the kitchen, you have a beautiful view of the water and enjoy the evening sun. The sitting area
is cozy and more secluded.

What is the difference in your experience as a resident versus as an architect?
To be honest, there’s no difference for me. I’m very sensitive to aesthetics, so if
something looks beautiful, it makes me feel calm and happy. But at the same time, the
pleasure of a space comes not only from aesthetics but also from its functionality, acoustics, tactility,
daylight, and the flow of the space. A space that looks very beautiful in a photo might not
feel right in real life. For example, it’s also important that you can lie “sheltered” on the couch
without having to see the mess in the kitchen. That brings just as much
joy as a photogenic image.

What’s your favorite spot in the house?
I find this a really tough question because there are so many different favorite spots.
When we have friends over, everyone always hangs out in the kitchen and on the wide
window sill that we had built in along the entire length of the house. When
it’s just the two of us, it’s wonderful to lounge on the couch in the evening and
watch the hustle and bustle on Clercqstraat at the same time. Thanks to the house’s location, you can
overlook the entire Clercqstraat from the couch, almost all the way to Admiraal de Ruijterweg.
With its low ceiling and skylights, the upstairs bedroom feels very cozy and luxurious, like
a small hotel room within our own home.

What role does the neighborhood play in making you feel at home?
We felt right at home in this neighborhood. Before this, we lived in the heart of
the city center for three years, and there everything was a lot more anonymous and geared toward tourists. Here,
we immediately had nice interactions with the neighbors, and the amenities are also more focused on
local residents. Just a stone’s throw away, there are countless great restaurants,
bakeries, and coffee shops. And from here, we can easily walk to both the Vondelpark and the
Jordaan.

Stacks Diner

American homestyle cooking. A modern take on a classic American diner in Amsterdam. Executive chef and owner Kevin Kearney also works as a creative director in advertising. When he moved to Amsterdam in 2017 for his wife's job, he missed having a restaurant 'in the middle'. Having worked for well-known chefs in New York in the past, he decided to open this 'diner'. Now there is also a 'deli' and even 'merchandise'. Everything (except the 'merch') is made in-house.

West Recycling Center

Kringloop West is the place to go for beautiful items at affordable prices. Here, old furniture is given a new lease of life in collaboration with the furniture makers at De Opwaardeerkamer. In the space below the store, various makers work on upcycling old items. Designer Miguel Visser from Hellingproof, for example, transforms an old drum into a new lamp. Another specialty of this thrift store is refurbished vintage racing bikes.
