Building
The striking building complex at Sloterkade 41–44 is estimated to have been built in 1932. It is a fine example of Amsterdam brick architecture from this period: solid, traditional, and with great attention to detail. The building has a rich history and was originally used as a Land Rover garage and showroom. These origins are still visible in the scale of the building and the industrial character of the space. Characteristic features include the wide facade, large windows, and high ceilings, which provide light and space.
Design vision
In 2006, the building was renovated on behalf of clothing company Imps&Elfs, based on a design by architect Jaap Dijkman. Dijkman is known for his repurposing and interventions in existing buildings and has worked on projects including the Toscanini restaurant, the NRC building, and De Waag in Amsterdam. Here too, the choice was not for a classic office layout, but for an open, studio-like space where working and meeting come together.
In the middle of the space is a central kitchen with a large dining table. This forms the heart of the building and emphasizes the collective character of the place. Above this central area, a skylight runs across the entire width of the building, allowing daylight to flood deep into the space. Beneath this skylight is a long table that is used for reading, cooking, and eating. As a result, the space functions not only as an office, but also as a studio and workshop where various activities naturally intermingle.
Characteristic features include the visible steel columns and window frames, the use of frosted glass in the office spaces, and the road plates on the floor. In addition to the open workspaces, the space has separate offices that offer sufficient peace and privacy to work or consult in concentration. Here, you can meet or work in peace, without losing connection with the rest of the space.
