History
The original building at Rokin 164-168/Kalverstraat 203 was designed by architect Francois Caron in 1912. Commissioned by Willem Vroom and Anton Dreesmann, a department store was created in a striking Berlagian style. This architectural approach forms a transition between neoclassicism and more modern movements.
A radical renovation of the building took Location the 1930s, based on a design by architect Jan Kuijt in the Amsterdam School style. The steel glass front was added to the facade and the passageway on Sint Jorissteeg was closed off.
This merged the original building with the 18th-century warehouses on Rokin and the 19th-century building designed by Jacot and Oldewelt on Kalverstraat. Due to various renovations, the individual buildings had lost their unique character over the years. The redevelopment project has impressively restored this character.
Redevelopment
Following the bankruptcy of V&D at the end of 2015, owner IEF Capital commissioned a large-scale, sustainable renovation of the department store, designed by architectural firm Office Winhov, to create a showroom and office space.
The distinctive architecture of Caron and Kuijt has been preserved and restored as much as possible. The densely built-up Sint Jorissteeg was restored and reopened. This critical reconstruction, aimed at reinforcing the character of the original buildings, has been more than successful. The steel curtain wall was of great architectural and historical importance and was therefore reconstructed with the original details preserved.
The ground floor of The Heart already houses a flagship store for Chinese mobility company Zeekr. The well-known European auction platform Catawiki is located on the second to fifth floors.
Design
The office space on the first floor has been elegantly finished. Much attention has been paid to details, from the elegant concealment of doors and fire hose reels to the chic hinges and locks.
