What the current residents will miss
“What makes this house so special is, of course, everything we’ve lived here. The holidays and long summer evenings, with dinners and drinks on the square—our own oasis in the city. Mornings on the bench by the front door, catching the first sun. Sitting together on the dock, watching the boats drift by and friends spontaneously mooring for a glass of wine. The charm of the house lives in every detail: the curved lines of the façade, the deep windowsills, the skirting boards, the doorframes, our characterful front door. In this place, we felt freedom, light and space. A home full of life. A home that feels like a work of art—to live in, to celebrate, and to cherish."

Waterpost
This former postal house has a remarkable history. Originally built for the dock police and customs authorities, it is also known as the Halberdiers’ Guardhouse—a name derived from the corps of halberdiers once stationed here. This unit, comprising approximately thirty men, was charged with guarding the Houthaven, the Oude Entrepotdok (the building’s location), and the Nieuwe Entrepotdok in the Eastern Docklands. According to the archives of Public Works, the building was repurposed in the 1950s to serve as the central heating facility for the nearby administration building. Where the two structures converged, a tall chimney was erected. Archival photographs reveal that during the 1980s, a delicatessen operated from the property. In 1992, a request was submitted to alter and expand the building in order to convert it into a private residence. A new storey was to be added, transforming the building’s original appearance. Permission was granted, and construction commenced in 2001.
In 2012, the house underwent a complete renovation, resulting in a beautifully modernised private home. The current owners have been living here with great pleasure since 2016.
Architecture
Established in 1827, the Entrepotdok formed part of the Royal Entrepot—a bonded warehouse district where colonial goods were stored and transferred, often under favourable tax conditions. This strategic infrastructure elevated Amsterdam’s status as a vital hub for international trade. The term entrepôt, derived from French, quite literally means ‘storage place’. The former police and customs post is a modest brick structure, subtly distinct from the adjoining building yet never in stark contrast. Its design, typical of the 1920s Public Works Department, bears clear traces of the Amsterdam School architectural style—though these elements are more restrained on the street-facing side. Details such as the broad window frames, the rounded brick projection on the corner, and the gently sloping quay wall already hint at this expressive movement. On the waterside, the influence of the Amsterdam School becomes more pronounced. A curved exterior wall offers a refined architectural response to the angled line of the quay. On the eastern side, the façade rises more prominently, while the lower section subtly pushes forward above a double window—a sculptural gesture characteristic of the style. The windows here also stand out: two diamond-shaped panes and a sharply pointed frame introduce a playful and distinctive touch to the composition.
Wining and dining
Upon entering the generous entrance hall, a refined transition into the rest of the home immediately unfolds. From here, the living kitchen reveals itself—the heart of the residence. This space radiates warmth and conviviality, accentuated by soft, rounded contours and an abundance of natural light. On one side, the kitchen offers a captivating view across the water, while the charming inner courtyard on the opposite side brings a lively and inviting atmosphere.
The kitchen itself is sleek and contemporary, outfitted with high-quality built-in appliances including a Quooker tap, a large oven with a six-burner gas stove, and a robust concrete countertop that adds a touch of industrial character. Across the hall, a tranquil study offers a balanced blend of functionality and serenity. A built-in bookcase and desk provide a practical workspace, while the water view creates a calm and inspiring setting. Throughout this level, a wooden floor enhances the overall sense of peace and cohesion. The bamboo staircase acts as an architectural focal point, leading to the first floor—a space that can only be described as remarkable. Expansive glass façades draw in the daylight and frame panoramic views over both the Entrepotdok and the Nieuwe Herengracht. The spacious living area, equipped with air conditioning, exudes tranquillity and openness, further accentuated by a polished cast floor that complements the modern ambiance. Adjacent lies a light-filled bedroom, wrapped in windows that offer sweeping views over the Entrepotdok. This room, too, would serve beautifully as a home office, merging comfort with visual serenity.
Rest and refresh
Located partially below the waterline, the lower ground floor houses the sleeping quarters—a space designed with care and attention to detail. The layout is both intimate and highly functional. The generous bathroom features a refined walk-in shower and a spacious washbasin unit, complemented by a separate toilet for added convenience. Along the hallway, a built-in wall of cabinetry provides ample storage, including a dedicated cupboard for laundry facilities. At the rear of this level, the principal bedroom offers a peaceful and private retreat, complete with air conditioning. A custom-made bamboo wardrobe spans the full wall, contributing to a clean and harmonious aesthetic. Adjoining the living room on the upper floor, the second bedroom is enclosed in glass, creating a light-filled space with sweeping, uninterrupted views over the water—a room that effortlessly balances openness and serenity.
