Zocherstraat in Amsterdam is located in the Overtoomse Sluis neighborhood in the West district, an area known for its distinctive 19th-century architectural style. The street is named after the renowned Dutch landscape architect Jan David Zocher, who designed the adjacent Vondelpark. In 1920, six lots were developed with three shop-houses and three ground-floor houses, each with separately rented upper floors. This was commissioned by the N.V. Amsterdamsche Maatschappij voor Woningbouw, and the construction site was known at the time as “De Nieuwe Stad.” At that time, Amsterdam’s expansion reached this location.
The style of the buildings is a blend of various styles and falls under eclecticism, an architectural movement that combines elements of Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, and Neoclassicism. The facades of the buildings in this neighborhood are often richly decorated.
Finally, as a key point, we found a 2003 study by the Local authority in the city archives Local authority the building’s foundation and classified it as Quality Level II.
The living area is located at the front of the home and is characterized by the bay window, which provides extra width and an even flow of natural light. The seating area runs along the windows and makes the most of the daylight and the view of the street, with ample space for a comfortable arrangement. Adjacent to this is the dining area, logically positioned between the living room and the kitchen. The open layout keeps the space uncluttered and allows for various configurations without making the whole feel fragmented. The kitchen features a central island and a sleek wall unit. The island serves as a workspace and gathering spot, with seating on one side. The appliances are integrated into the cabinetry, giving the space a clean, uncluttered look that blends seamlessly with the rest of the home. At the rear, the kitchen opens onto the balcony via sliding doors. Because it faces west, the sun streams in here in the evening, giving the cooking and dining area a warmer atmosphere as the day progresses. The balcony is sheltered and offers enough space for a small table and chairs, with a view of the courtyard gardens.
The combination of a bay window at the front and a balcony at the back creates a pleasant balance between liveliness and tranquility within the living space.
The master bedroom is located at the front of the home and features built-in closets. What makes this home special to us is its unique location: peaceful living on a charming street, yet right in the heart of the city. Because you live so close to Vondelpark, you really get to experience the changing seasons. Plus, everything is within easy reach: boutique gyms, coffee shops, and stores are all just a short walk away. The house is located in Oud-West, but the rest of West and Oud-Zuid are also nearby. For us, this has always been the best of both worlds.
We love spending time in the bright and spacious living room, where natural light streams in beautifully. From the front, you can just make out the Vondelpark, and inside, you’ll feel a sense of space and tranquility. On sunny days, the two balconies are also favorite spots: perfect for a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine, with the evening sun in the warmer months as an added bonus.
This part of Oud-West is quiet yet lively, with a nice mix of residents: young people, older residents, and families all living side by side. Zocherstraat runs parallel to Vondelpark and is close to Overtoom and Amstelveenseweg, putting all amenities within easy reach. In the (almost) ten years we lived here, the neighborhood has, in our opinion, only developed in a positive way. The immediate area offers a huge selection of coffee shops, delis, gyms, stores, and museums—everything that makes the city so great.
For coffee, we like to go to YNK (sunshine almost all day long), and for a good sandwich, we head to Foccaceria or Local Deli. For drinks, Café Conrad, right on Zocherstraat, is highly recommended and a classic neighborhood café. As for restaurants, Parallel and Gustatio are our favorites.
What we’ll miss most is the perfect balance between tranquility and vibrancy. You step out the door and find yourself right in the greenery of Vondelpark or in the heart of the city, while at home you enjoy peace and space. We’ll definitely miss the pleasant atmosphere in the street and the neighborhood, too. Fortunately, we’re staying close by
