Together with my colleague Jelle Mundt, I have an appointment with the sellers. They are strangers to me, but certainly not to Kees and Broersma. We have advised them on several occasions and have now been invited to list this beautiful three-story townhouse for sale.
During the conversation, it turns out that one of the sellers, in addition to his work as a journalist and program maker, is the author of a poignant account of Amsterdam's city center during the German occupation. His wife is a research assistant at the Institute for Informatics at the University of Amsterdam.
Both are approaching retirement and their children have left home, so they see this as a natural moment to sell this spacious home and move to a more compact place.
I am very taken with this special apartment on the edge of the city center and Oud-Zuid. I particularly like the courtyard, which allows lots of light to enter everywhere. I don't often see this in residences around the fin de siècle. And that in such a beautiful location, in the middle of the city and surrounded by a sea of greenery. I would definitely go for it!

Vossiusstraat was built at the end of the 19th century. The facade of Number and the adjacent residences all the characteristics of the eclectic architectural style that flourished during that period. In 2004, a major renovation took place, dividing the building into two apartments. Everything was addressed, from the foundation to the electrical wiring, gas installations, and the building's shell. The painting on the rear and the courtyard was done recently.
A spacious hall with fitted wardrobes, a separate toilet, and a large stained-glass window to the light court divides the apartment into a front and rear. A stately entrance on the landing gives access to a special period room, with large windows and a beautiful authentic fireplace. The herringbone floor with a single border, the spatial effect of the high ceilings, and the lovely south-facing balcony give this room extra cachet. In addition, there is the atmospheric traditional kitchen, generously sized and with plenty of space on the robust Belgian bluestone countertop. And fully equipped to prepare meals with and for friends. Such as a five-burner gas stove, an oven, and plenty of built-in appliances. Very cozy: the kitchen is connected to the dining room via an en-suite, also a pleasant, light space with three windows and a flower balcony facing the park. The view of the park is different and impressive every season.
The staircase leads to a spacious landing, adorned with a beautiful stained-glass window in the stairwell. This floor houses the master bedroom, a connecting room, and a study/office. The landing also offers space for an additional bathroom with shower and sink and a spacious closet with washer and dryer. The master bedroom is quietly located at the rear, overlooking the deep green gardens, and has its own bathroom with underfloor heating, bathtub, and sink. The toilet is separate and Immediately the bedroom on the landing. The comfortable connecting room—used as a TV room and library—is extra light thanks to the windows facing the courtyard. Under the original decorative ceiling, it is a favorite spot for the current owners. The beautiful en-suite still has the original wooden panel doors. By opening these, the library can easily be incorporated into the study, which overlooks the park. Here, too, an exuberantly decorated fireplace adorns the room.
The top floor
At the quiet rear is a romantic bedroom with exposed beams and a Velux window. At the front is a self-contained unit, ideal for an au pair or a young adult child living at home. With its ceiling height of over 3 meters, attic windows, and dormer window, the living area has the feel of a studio. There is a pantry and a bathroom with a hip bath/shower, sink, and space for a washing machine. The study, with its partially sloping roof, provides access to the Roof terrace, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the park and the city from the first rays of spring sunshine until late autumn.
There are three good outdoor areas. First, there is a balcony facing the park at the front. Secondly, there is a balcony Immediately the living room. This is recessed, making it possible to sit opposite each other at a table. The awning provides the desired shade in summer, keeping the space cool. To enjoy the sun all day long, there is a delightful square Roof terrace over 30 m² with magnificent views all around.

We always wanted a large room with three windows in a row. Our old ground floor apartment on Nicolaas Maesstraat didn't offer that. But the upper floor apartment on Vossiusstraat has no fewer than two of those regal windows: at the front and rear. Built as a canal house with a front and rear section separated by an atrium, it is spacious and light. From spring to autumn, the view offers a beautiful oasis of greenery in the Vondelpark and flowering plants and trees in the deep gardens at the rear. The large balcony at the rear is in the sun all day long, perfect for breakfast or lazing around reading. The Roof terrace a phenomenal, unobstructed view of Amsterdam on all sides. We have celebrated parties there, watched the fireworks on New Year's Eve, slept during balmy summer nights, had drinks and enjoyed the sun and the panoramic view. The upper house offers beautiful light, a feeling of security and privacy, passers-by cannot see inside, and stairs are not attractive to burglars. Moreover, climbing stairs is good for maintaining physical fitness. The house is elegant and has colorful stained glass. We restored the five fireplaces to their former glory after they had been painted white. Their rich decorations, with the wood carvings on the banister and the stained glass, testify to the attention to detail with which houses were built around the turn of the last century. The house is spacious, which was ideal for us with teenage children. There is a place for everyone to be undisturbed, but also the entire second floor as a place to be together, play games, eat, and discuss.
The neighborhood is great, a crossroads of Oud-West, Centrum and Oud-Zuid. Most of the things we love are within walking distance: the major museums, the Concertgebouw, the International Theater Amsterdam and on Saturdays the ZuiderMRKT at the intersection of Johannes Verhulststraat and Jacob Obrechtstraat. We also like to shop on the west side, where there is a greengrocer, a butcher, a fish shop, a wine shop and two supermarkets. On the south side we eat at Bark, or l'Entrecote et les dames, drink coffee at Wildschut or Keyzer and visit the bookstore diagonally opposite the large Albert Heijn. To the north you are within walking distance of Leidseplein, where we go to the theater or the cinema or attend a lecture at De Balie. The Vondelpark is in front of the door, great for an evening walk, a glass on the terrace of Park Zuid, a bike or running tour. For children there is the playground at the Groot Melkhuis, where parents talk, read and keep a close eye on the playing children on the spacious terrace. In winter, when there is ice, people skate on the large pond. There are plenty of exciting trees to climb.
We will miss the beautiful view, the summers at the park as if you were living outdoors, the ideal location, and all the refined details in the house. But fortunately, we are staying in the neighborhood. We are once again choosing an upstairs apartment: light, safe, private, and excellent for our health.
