Architecture
H.H. Baanders was a prominent architect in Amsterdam around the turn of the century. He was born in Zutphen, where he trained as a carpenter. After moving to Amsterdam in 1871, he started a carpentry workshop there and studied architecture in the evenings at the Industrial School of the Society for the Working Class. He then worked for other architects for several years. Around 1890, he began his independent career. Baanders mainly designed residences a few office buildings, mostly in an eclectic, historicist architectural style. His best-known work is probably the Astoria building, the office of a life insurance company on the corner of Keizersgracht and Leliegracht. He designed it together with Gerrit van Arkel.
The three buildings on Van Eeghenstraat were also built in the eclectic architectural style. Eclecticism is the free combination of elements from different historical styles or movements in a single work. In architectural history, the term is mainly used to refer to the movement that opposed 19th-century historicism, which emphasized the imitation of a historical style. An eclectic building incorporates freely interpreted features from various neo-styles, which are combined into a new, ahistorical whole. He died after falling into the water of the Ruysdaelkade in the dark one evening in March 1905. He had lived and worked at Number on that quay since 1904.

Tamari Ya

Tamari Ya was founded by Imoto Yoshihisa and Yazawa Yuji, two Japanese entrepreneurs who started a farm-stay retreat in their village near Hiroshima and opened their first donut shop there in 2023 to revitalize their community. Out of their love for rice, they developed the komeko donut, made from rice flour from their own region and therefore naturally gluten-free. In Amsterdam, the donuts are handmade daily and fried in rice oil, without preservatives or colorants. The texture is different from what you are used to: less fluffy, more chewy, with varieties such as old fashioned or yeast-raised in flavors such as matcha, black sesame, and pistachio. The quiet, wood-dominated shop on Overtoom feels like a piece of the Japanese countryside in the city, where attention to food and the environment is central.
