The Icon
A luxury apartment in an iconic building offering stunning panoramic views of Amsterdam. De Pontsteiger is iconic, exudes international charm, and is brimming with exclusivity. The 90-meter-tall complex is located at the U in the relatively new Houthavens, on the edge of the Spaarndammerbuurt, the city center, and the Jordaan. This mix is what makes living here so enjoyable. The apartment is on the 19th floor in the “bridge section” of the Pontsteiger. According to the architects, this is the most beautiful section with the most stunning views. On one side, views over the city; on the other, views over the U.
The design choices made are exceptionally unique and elegant. The architect has created a stunning layout centered around the V-shaped support beams. The apartment feels warm, is very atmospheric, and is exceptional in its use of the latest technologies and materials. From the beautiful kitchen to the use of teak on the terrace. Here, the indoors and outdoors blend seamlessly. The owner found inspiration for the interior design all over the world, particularly in Italy and America from the 1950s and 1960s. Designers like Carlo Ponti, but also a painter like Koekoek. A touch of Art Deco, Bohemian, Romanticism, but also Old Masters. A perfect mix that fits together incredibly well.

The building

The 90-meter-tall, gate-shaped Pontsteiger apartment complex is rising in the relatively new Houthavens neighborhood. This iconic building, located on the IJ where the ferry to the NDSM site departs from the 200-meter-long pier, is a remarkable example of modern architecture. The design by Arons and Gelauff Architects was selected in 2007 and, despite the credit crisis, completed in 2015. The building, which was finally completed in 2019, contains 350 residences, as well as shops and restaurants.
The residences strategically placed at the top and at the base of the building, where people prefer to live. Striking features of the building include the bronze-green tiles between the floors and the distinctive external and internal V-shaped support beams. In 2020, Pontsteiger was one of nine nominees for the Amsterdam Architecture Prize, a recognition of its exceptional contribution to the cityscape.

BAK

Restaurant Bak is beautifully situated on the water in Amsterdam's Houthavens, on the third floor of warehouse Het Veem. They work with fish from sustainable fisheries, meat from local producers, but with vegetables in the leading role. The menu changes daily with the seasons and the supply from the producers. Boon & de Koot

Following the success of Zoldering, chef Thomas Bron, wine importer Joost Clarijs, and sommeliers Job Seuren and Wout Jans opened Boon & de Koot, an accessible wine bar in the Zeeheldenbuurt neighborhood, without compromising on quality. The menu starts with hearty snacks such as oeuf mayo with roasted garlic and lovage, cleverly served so you can eat it in one bite. This is followed by refined starters such as raw sea bass with beurre noisette and calamansi or a coarse steak tartare with radicchio and anchovies. The real showstopper is the dish of roasted peas with tomatillo, olive, and egg yolk, a perfect interplay of smoke, freshness, and creaminess. Inside, there is a French bistro atmosphere, while outside, the terrace with marble tables and burgundy chairs invites you to linger for another glass.

Freud Restaurant

Restaurant Freud is more than just a good restaurant. The restaurant is a training company and part of the social enterprise Roads. This means that Restaurant Freud takes care of mentally 'vulnerable' people who are distanced from the labor market. In addition to focusing on food—inspired by Mediterranean cuisine—there is a great deal of attention and care for people: both staff and guests. The same care goes into the products the restaurant chooses, based on criteria that are "good for society and the environment." If you don't have time to visit the restaurant on Spaarndammerstraat, you can use the catering service or gift vouchers for the restaurant.

Museum het Schip is a museum about the Amsterdam School; an art and architecture movement from the early 20th century. This movement is known for the strong housing ideals with which it is associated. The residential block in which the museum is located is perhaps just as special as the museum itself. The original post office in the building is special; the only post office in the Netherlands that has remained untouched since the 1920s. The elegant style of architect Michel de Klerk can be recognized throughout the building. In his designs, every detail has been considered.

The Movies

The Movies cinema has been around since 1912. It is often called the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, but formally that is the Uitkijk cinema, which registered a year earlier. In its early years, the cinema was used as a small-scale neighborhood cinema, and only after the Second World War were films shown to a larger audience. Today, it is one of the most popular arthouse cinemas in Amsterdam. Many visitors also come to The Movies to admire the historic interior. The cinema is located in a 17th-century building on the Haarlemmerdijk and the original art-deco interior has been well preserved. A visit to this cinema feels like a journey through time.
