BAKEN No. 244
We have known the current residents and owners for some time, and we have seen firsthand how tastefully they can renovate and live in their home. Given their creative background and interest in design, this comes as no surprise. But still…
As the first residents and buyers from the construction phase, they had virtually complete freedom at BAKEN No. 244 to apply their creativity to the layout and finishing of this home.
They Immediately saw Immediately potential in the foundation—a floor plan with light on three sides, large windows, and a terrace that guarantees a view of the IJ.
For them, it has project a beautiful project in which the details, materials, and spaces had to fit together seamlessly. Their design and supervision of the execution have resulted in a truly exquisite apartment with refined luxury. The home features a floor plan with a layout that is balanced, functional, and optimally showcases the space and the view.
We recognize that the creativity and energy invested in the attention to detail add significant value to this exceptional apartment.
In our view, living in L’Authentique is particularly appealing thanks to the presence of an elevator, private parking, and the light and views over the IJ from an intimate, partially covered terrace.

Architecture

Narva Island is a unique residential area in Amsterdam’s Houthavens where history, Sustainability contemporary living come together. The island is part of a transformed neighborhood along the IJ, where former timber docks have been redeveloped into a vibrant urban district with a distinctively Amsterdam character. Narva Island consists of three sub-areas: Houthaven DEF, Narva Island West, and Baken van Narva. The name Narva refers to the Estonian Baltic Sea port of Narva, which was historically important for the timber trade with Amsterdam. Although the neighborhood is still young, it already feels mature and well-integrated. It is thus a successful urban expansion of the western islands.
Narva-Baken is part of Baken van Narva and was designed by the Rotterdam-based architectural firm Klunder. Stefan Fremouw designed the two end buildings of the block, which stand identically mirrored across the inner street at the head of Narva Island on the IJ side.
These buildings conclude the building volume—which previously resembled canal houses along the street—with a more apartment-building-like appearance. This is emphasized by horizontal lines, abundant glass, and terraces. In addition to glass, the facade features elegant brickwork with slender, elongated bricks, giving the building a light appearance.
The end building consists of four apartments that share a common entrance. The apartments are oriented on three sides, providing plenty of light and views and giving the floors a spacious character. The floor plans were largely flexible from the outset, and the first buyers also had the freedom to customize the finishes. For the current owners, this was the motivation for choosing this particular development.
Drawing on a creative background, a home has been realized in which both the layout and the finishes have been thought through in detail. With a focus on functionality, living, dining, working, sleeping, and bathing flow organically into one another. In the finishes, the use of materials, color, and detailing form a consistent whole. The quality, discipline, and craftsmanship give the apartment timeless added value, where living and working come together naturally.

Living and cooking

Life in this apartment is defined by light and views, with an unobstructed vista of the ever-changing waters of the IJ. The living area stretches approximately 14 meters, featuring large windows and terraces that mark the transition to the outdoors and ensure a seamless connection.
Inside, a balance is created between spaciousness and intimacy, with a layered layout that provides space for dining, relaxing, and working. The oak floor in a herringbone pattern, combined with underfloor heating and cooling, and the round tiled columns provide character and comfort, while the sleekly plastered ceiling underscores the refinement.
The kitchen forms an integral part of the living space and is organized around a central cooking island that serves as the functional and aesthetic heart of the room. Crafted in black wood and veined marble called Stormy Glazier, featuring veins in lime and bronze tones, with subtly integrated Gaggenau appliances, it creates a space where cooking and socializing naturally come together.

Sleeping and bathing

The layout not only provides a spacious and thoughtfully designed living area; the bedrooms and bathrooms have also been designed with the same attention to detail. The home features three bedrooms, two Bathrooms a separate study.
The master bedroom is executed with understated elegance and a soft, almost feminine approach in color and material selection, including Inkiostro Bianco wallpaper. Rounded shapes and refined details bring a sense of calm, while custom built-in cabinets provide a well-thought-out layout and practical storage space, including niches for art.
The two bedrooms have a more playful character, with subtle details that allow for individuality and a light, youthful atmosphere.
The master bedroom’s ensuite bathroom features a beautifully designed double vanity in wood, with rounded shapes and a white countertop, combined with a wall finished in Stormy Glazier marble, featuring lime-colored veins, and a mirror. The space is equipped with a toilet and a spacious walk-in shower. Brushed brass faucets by Vola and towel warmers lend the space a sense of understated luxury.
The second bathroom is accessible separately and offers the same level of quality, with the added feature of a freestanding oval bathtub. Additionally, there is a separate toilet and a separate laundry room.

Museum het Schip

Museum het Schip is a museum about the Amsterdam School; an art and architecture movement from the early 20th century. This movement is known for the strong housing ideals with which it is associated. The residential block in which the museum is located is perhaps just as special as the museum itself. The original post office in the building is special; the only post office in the Netherlands that has remained untouched since the 1920s. The elegant style of architect Michel de Klerk can be recognized throughout the building. In his designs, every detail has been considered.

The Ravestijn Gallery

The Ravestijn Gallery was founded in Amsterdam in 2012 by Jasper Bode and Narda Van 't Veer with a focus on exploratory and provocative approaches to contemporary photography. And they have succeeded in this. The gallery represents various national and international experimental artists who demonstrate the power of photography in all kinds of different ways. This modern approach to contemporary photography makes the exhibitions at De Ravestijn Gallery very interesting. But, in addition, the artworks are also a great aesthetic pleasure to look at and perhaps even a good source of inspiration for decorating a new home?

The Movies

The Movies cinema has been around since 1912. It is often called the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, but formally that is the Uitkijk cinema, which registered a year earlier. In its early years, the cinema was used as a small-scale neighborhood cinema, and only after the Second World War were films shown to a larger audience. Today, it is one of the most popular arthouse cinemas in Amsterdam. Many visitors also come to The Movies to admire the historic interior. The cinema is located in a 17th-century building on the Haarlemmerdijk and the original art-deco interior has been well preserved. A visit to this cinema feels like a journey through time.

Sunday Market

Every first Sunday of the month there is Sunday Market Westergas. A trendy, funky shopping place for many different things. Art, fashion, design, vintage & deli, food from all over the world, music and much more. The Westerpark has been called the nicest park in Amsterdam by some, and thanks to this market we understand why. Tip: in the spring the blossom is beautiful in the trees, worth a look!
