Architecture

The building is part of a block of four buildings with ground floor dwellings and single-story apartments dating from 1904. The buildings were constructed in the architectural style popular at the time: Neo-Renaissance, a style period that reinterpreted the Dutch Renaissance of the 16th century. Characteristic of the Neo-Renaissance are the horizontal layers of natural stone between the brickwork and the stepped gables, which are almost indistinguishable from those of the Renaissance period. The historical sentiment was now emphasized even more strongly by an even more exuberant use of decorations. The same was true for shops, which wanted to stand out in order to attract customers. Typical of this period are the elegant balconies, beautiful front doors, and brickwork with glazed bricks. Inside, the original paneling, beautiful ceilings, and panel doors have been preserved.

What the owner will miss

This top-floor apartment is a special place. The strikingly high ceilings and windows provide an incredible amount of light. Because the building across the street is lower, you can enjoy unobstructed views from the cozy kitchen and living room. With so much light inside, a balcony at the rear, and a spacious Roof terrace, it almost feels like you don't need to leave the house—except perhaps for a quick trip to the cozy Zuidermarkt. A favorite spot in the house is undoubtedly the dining table. With a cup of coffee and the newspaper, it's wonderful to sit here and enjoy both the view of the beautiful Johannes Verhulststraat and the soothing atmosphere of the kitchen and the cozy gas fireplace. The neighborhood also contributes to the unique character of this home. The beautiful, tree-lined streets and the tranquility of this specific part of Oud-Zuid make it a particularly pleasant place to live. The Zuidermarkt on Saturdays and the jazz afternoons at Café Welling add extra charm to the neighborhood, while well-known restaurants, the Vondelpark, Cornelis Schuytstraat, the Concertgebouw, and various museums are all within walking distance. There are plenty of great places to visit in the neighborhood. Children's clothing store Donsje on Willemsparkweg is a favorite, as is the popular Coffee District a few doors down. Opposite is one of the best interior design stores in the city: Edha. For a cozy evening out, Garçon is perfect, for a culinary experience Visque, and for a quick but delicious pizza, Quattro Stagioni around the corner is ideal. What will we miss the most? The bright living room with its high, original ceiling and stylish kitchen. This special light will be difficult to match, especially since we are looking for a ground floor or beletage apartment due to the arrival of our daughter.

In addition to the appetizer platters that change weekly, there are also main courses on the menu.

De Schuyt Butcher Shop

Butcher shop De Schuyt, named after its location on Cornelis Schuytstraat, has the parakeet as its symbol. Just like the parakeet, this distinctive butcher shop has its origins in the 1970s, and both have carved out a place for themselves in Amsterdam. Inspired by the parakeet, owner Evert Blauwendraat started his butcher shop with the idea of giving it a distinctive, personal, and special emblem that everyone could recognize. This family business with a rich history is the place to go for meat and delicacies.

This neighborhood café has a long history. The café has been around for more than 70 years but has only been called Café Welling since 1963. This history may explain the familiar atmosphere that always seems to be present in this café. Interesting for music lovers: Café Welling regularly organizes Jazz evenings.

His own professional journey began in the kitchen of the two-star restaurant Chapeau, after which he gained experience at places including Aan de Poel, Ron Gastrobar, and Lars Amsterdam. With Franzen, Jesse creates a place that feels like a modern living room for the city. Accessible and warm, but always with a high standard. L’Entrecôte et les Dames embraces the concept of a formula restaurant, as the French call it. If you are still hungry afterwards, you will be served another portion. Prefer not to eat meat? As an alternative, they serve sole fried in butter with ravigotte sauce. Esh Pitabar is the new chapter for brothers Ilan and Joël Benamara, who previously ran Café Martinot since 2015 until the building was forced to close in 2022 due to foundation repairs. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, they decided to rebuild their business, this time with more space for their Israeli roots and inspiration from Tel Aviv. Chef Ilan Benamara himself is in the kitchen and enforces a simple but clear rule: everything is homemade, from the hummus to the pita bread. The menu features street food such as pita falafel, hummus with warm chickpeas, and fresh pizzas, just like you would eat them in Israel.
