Designvision
The street was named on October 16, 1901; a reference to the painter of animals and still lifes, Melchior de Hondecoeter. In 1904, the street was redefined; the short section of Frans van Mierisstraat, Jacob Obrechtplein, formerly known as Verlengde Hondecoeterstraat, was added. Until the municipality of Amsterdam began development here, it had been agricultural land for centuries, belonging to the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel in the 19th century.
The street starts at De Lairessestraat and runs south towards Jacob Obrechtplein. The numbering of houses runs from north to south, probably a remnant from the time of the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel; Amsterdam generally numbers from the Boerenwetering, as seen in the parallel Jacob Obrechtstraat and Van Baerlestraat, which number from south to north and also form the east and west borders of the neighborhood.
Hondecoeterstraat 20-22
These two houses were designed by Johannes Pelser (Utrecht, 1859 – Amsterdam, 1939), who was not originally an architect. He was both a real estate agent and a supervisor, buying plots of land to build on and then selling them. Pelser lived at Hondecoeterstraat 22. The two buildings are symmetrically arranged with a horseshoe arch above the entrances. A notable aspect is that each of the apartments has its own front door from the street. Only at the back of the building is a shared staircase to the attic floor.
The apartment is located in a quiet part of Oud Zuid and is situated on the ground floor with its own entrance from the street. This bright and charming apartment is spacious and situated on freehold land. The apartment still boasts various authentic details, such as doors, ceilings, and a fireplace.
