History

History ofthe Calendar Buildings (
)
The Calendar Buildings are twelve warehouses, each named after a month. Completed in 1840, these warehouses were the first buildings in the Netherlands to use cast iron in a load-bearing structure.
Most of the warehouses on the Entrepotdok were converted into residential homes and small commercial spaces in the 1980s. However, the Kalenderpanden, named after the months of the year displayed on their facades, remained squatted until 2000.
Architectural firm Claus en Kaan designed the redevelopment of the warehouses, which are protected as national monuments, into luxury apartments. They removed a strip of the complex Immediately the rear facade, creating a sheltered courtyard garden and turning the old facade into a wind and noise barrier. New communal stairwells provide access to the residences the middle.

Frank's Smokehouse

Frank's smokehouse has been located in Amsterdam for more than twenty years, still in the same place where the first real store was opened on the Wittenburgergracht. As early as 1984, Frank learned to smoke trout in Sweden and was thus captivated by the simple primal form of preservation. When he continued this in his Rear garden in Amsterdam, friends first became his customers and grew into an established smokehouse. If you walk past it, you can already smell the scent of artisanal smoked fish and meat outside.

Artis

Artis is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, founded in 1838 with the aim of bringing nature closer to people. It started small as a garden with a pond and a winter garden, and over the years more and more buildings, animals and trees were added. Today, there are more than 900 different animal species to admire, including some special species such as the algazelles, the white-tailed gnus and the margay. You can easily spend a whole day in Artis. Imagine yourself in a tropical climate, admire special fish species and laugh at the monkeys on the monkey rock.
