Living in a former telephone exchange, surrounded by greenery and light. In the summer of 2021, we entered this iconic building for the first time, which was still in use as a telephone exchange at the time. The rooms were filled with outdated electronics and computers that once connected the city to the rest of the world. Yet the unique potential of the building was immediately apparent. Sunlight streamed in through the large windows, and the high ceilings revealed the impressive space. The long, wide corridors, with their tiles and arched windows, were reminiscent of an old school. The size, robustness, and character of this building are truly unparalleled. Outside, the Centrale offers a unique garden that guarantees peace and privacy. Architectural firm Rijnboutt designed the Centrale, focusing on light and space, in harmony with the original character and structure of the building. The high windows and ceilings of more than five meters give the residences loft-like feeling of space. The interior design is by Studio Piet Boon, where tranquility, luxury, and light predominate. His design respects the original structure of the building; the concrete columns and roof construction have been deliberately left exposed, creating a unique combination of old and new. Three years later, 19 townhouses have been completed here, each with its own floor plan, detailing, and character. The garden has been transformed into a green oasis where children can play safely and residents can enjoy the serene outdoor environment.

The building was originally constructed in the late 1920s in a smaller form as the Sixth Central. A building that clearly displays the characteristics of the Amsterdam School style, designed by the Public Works Department. According to the Public Works Department's design, a building was constructed that resembled a school building in terms of its exterior. Large windows spanning two floors and an imposing chimney dominate the image. The four residences the entrance on Filips van Almondestraat are also part of the building. The entrance is accentuated by a semicircular window with muntins, as well as tiles and paneling. In keeping with the style, there is a robust and beautifully detailed double door. These are still in their original condition. Unusual for that time, the building was constructed in concrete, with the foundations and floors, but especially the concrete trusses, forming a solid basis. The facades were traditionally constructed in brickwork and wooden window frames. The interior was also designed by the Public Works Department, with the entrance hall and stairwell appealing to the imagination, and the architect was even responsible for the font used on the signage. In 1949, a few years after the war, the building was extended and enlarged. Only an architectural eye will notice the extension from the façade, as it was built in the same style. For the transformation into a residential function, a procedure was followed in which the neighborhood and the district council first contributed their vision and ideas. Thanks to the neighborhood, the idea arose to create more spacious family homes to supplement the current offering in this part of the city. In addition, the building has the status a Municipal Monument and a monument permit was required. Rijnboutt Architects took care of the concept and design, with the preservation of the appearance being paramount. Together with the client, Broersma Wonen architectural firm AVB, the housing types and layouts were optimized. Design agency Piet Boon was responsible for the interior design, materials, and color scheme. Landscape architect Studio REDD was commissioned to design the gardens. The designs make ample room for natural greenery to promote inner-city biodiversity. The gardens are enclosed by evergreen hedges.
