The building block at Deurloostraat 44 to 48 consists of three buildings and was constructed in the Amsterdam School architectural style, typical of the construction period in the 1920s and 1930s. The building block was designed by the well-known Amsterdam architect Cornelis Kruyswijk and is generally characterized by good proportions and a distinctive plasticity. Pairs of protruding bay windows or window sections, vertical marking of entrances, profiling of corner sections, articulation of large brick surfaces, and detailed facade finishes with festive brickwork. Wherever you look, you see design with great attention to detail and craftsmanship. Almost from the start of the development of Berlage's 1917 Plan-Zuid urban development plan, Kruyswijk was involved in the realization of a number of residential blocks. A large part of this urban expansion was built by Amstels Bouwvereniging, in which seventy construction companies collaborated. In order to maintain some control over the quality of the architecture, a special committee was appointed under municipal architect Allard Remco Hulshoff, which was responsible for selecting architects for this work and also determining the conditions under which the chosen architects had to work. Among other things, Kruyswijk was given responsibility for the two blocks at the intersection of Amstellaan (now Vrijheidslaan) and Rijnstraat. Beyond this intersection lies Victorieplein, the urban hub where the three main axes, Vrijheidslaan, Churchilllaan, and Rooseveltlaan, converge. The entrance to the square is formed by these two residential blocks with a shopping arcade. The northern part was completed in 1924, the southern part in 1928. Seen from Vrijheidslaan, the two blocks form a kind of gateway to the square, partly due to the narrowing of the building line at this point. The arcades with shops were the first in a series of shopping arcades that were built at that time, such as those on Mercatorplein (architect H.P. Berlage) and Surinameplein by architect J. Roodenburgh.
