The Pink Panther
As a real estate agency, we assist with the sale of a wide range of properties. I myself really enjoy visiting Amsterdam-West, and can often be found there. I love the buzz in the neighborhood and the amenities are good. J.P. Heijestraat, Jan Evertsenstraat, Kinkerstraat, and Postjesweg, among others, offer a wide variety of shops, specialty stores, and caterers. There are also several good restaurants and cozy cafés in the neighborhood. The apartment at Cabotstraat 21 H, which we are selling on behalf of our office, is a very efficiently laid out ground floor apartment with a lovely garden. It is also very centrally located in Amsterdam-West, near three large parks: Rembrandtpark, Erasmuspark, and Vondelpark. At the front of the building, you can experience the urban dynamism with a Cruijff soccer field, and at the rear, you can enjoy peace and quiet. If you are interested, I would like to invite you to come and take a look. I will, of course, tell you more about the apartment then. Perhaps we will see you soon.

Architecture

The Admiralenbuurt is the area between Admiralengracht, Erasmusgracht, Orteliuskade, and Postjeswetering. Several facades on the east side of Admiralengracht are also considered part of the neighborhood in terms of urban planning. The neighborhood was part of Plan West, the expansion plan that followed Plan Zuid. Plan West also included the Postjesbuurt (Westindische Buurt) and the Hoofddorppleinbuurt. The architects of this plan designed all the houses in the Amsterdam School style. The Amstel’s Bouw Vereeniging played an extremely important role in reviving private housing construction and as an advocate. One of the prominent members of the Vereeniging's board was J.A. Bangert. Bangert also built houses together with his brother. The building complex consisting of six plots, 19 residences two shop houses at Cabostraat 19 to 25 and Vasco da Gamastraat 46 and 48 was designed by J.A. Bangert. As mentioned earlier, the building at Cabotstraat 21 was constructed in the Amsterdam School architectural style. This style was popular in the Netherlands—especially in Amsterdam—from around 1910 to 1940. Characteristics of the Amsterdam School, which are also clearly evident in this building, are:

  • Use of brick: The facade is entirely constructed of brick, with meticulous masonry work.
  • Repetition and symmetry: The windows are symmetrical and arranged in a strict rhythm.
  • Vertical accents: The downspouts and windows emphasize the vertical lines.
  • Geometric shapes: Straight lines and block-like window shapes are typical.
  • Subtle decoration: There is no excessive ornamentation, but attention to detail, for example in the decorative brickwork accents between the windows.

The building is therefore a fine example of early 20th-century urban housing, with the functional yet elegant appearance of the Amsterdam School style.

The living room is the heart of the home. There is ample space for a sitting and dining area, making it the ideal place for relaxation and socializing. The large windows allow plenty of light to enter, further enriching the space. The open kitchen has a timeless black design with trendy white/taupe tiles and is equipped with a granite countertop. The kitchen is equipped with various built-in appliances, including a Quooker tap, oven, dishwasher, 4-burner gas hob, extractor hood, and fridge/freezer. What the owner will miss

From the very first moment, this home felt like a warm, cozy place. The layout is compact and well-organized, making it particularly suitable for two people. The living room with open kitchen forms the beating heart of the house—a space where people enjoy cooking, dining, and relaxing. The kitchen has been recently renovated and equipped with a Quooker, a refined detail that adds comfort to everyday use.
What makes this home extra special is the tranquility of the garden. As soon as the doors open to the outside, the city fades into the background. In the morning, you can hear birds singing – a surprising contrast to the lively city life outside. The sunny south-facing location makes it an ideal place to relax at the start or end of the day. Parking has also been taken into consideration: there is usually space in front of the door and an underground parking garage is a five-minute walk away, accessible with a permit.
The location in De Baarsjes is lively and developing, with numerous great places within easy reach. The Kinkerstraat, Ten Katemarkt, and De Hallen are within walking distance—perfect for a quick errand, a good glass of wine, or a movie.
For seafood lovers, De Zeeduivel in Jan Pieter Heijestraat is highly recommended. Eating a herring or a bowl of kibbeling is simply a must. And for people with a boat: you can moor it a stone's throw away in the Admiralengracht. After a long day of sailing in your sloop, moor the boat and then have a BBQ in the garden with friends – a great day!

We will especially miss the atmosphere and convenience of this place. The house feels spacious and light, yet compact and cozy—truly a home for a couple. The tranquility of the garden, the cozy living room, the pleasant neighborhood, and the practical location make it a wonderful place to live.

Daalder (*)

Chef Huwaë's Indonesian roots and Asian influences spice up his inventiveness. He does not shy away from contrasting flavors. This chef's talent lies in the harmony he achieves with such combinations. Sometimes he is a little more classic, such as with a perfectly cooked langoustine served with a butter sauce enriched with champagne, orange, and Grand Marnier. Subtle, intense, explosive. Totally Dennis Huwaë. Daalder has 1 Michelin star.

Little Sin

Le Petit Péché symbolizes the little sin. By cooking openly behind the bar, they want to show that it is possible to prepare meat and fish in a respectful manner. The ingredients are locally sourced. The chefs embrace products that are often less common. The (already) signature dish is fried frog legs with bottarga and marrow mayonnaise. Naturally, they strive to retain the warm and accessible flavors that people know from Café Beurre.

Vitalente Café

Café Vita Lente was opened by Simon Witmaar, former owner of the Michelin-starred restaurant Coulisse, which he ran together with Tim van der Molen. With Vita Lente, he deliberately chose something completely different: not fine dining, but a café where spontaneity and freedom are central. Bas Holthuizen, who came over from Coulisse, is in charge of the kitchen, where he cooks in a more relaxed format with hot and cold dishes that you can order throughout the day. The concept revolves around the Italian idea of 'vita lenta', slow living, where you can walk in at any time from 11:30 a.m. and stay as long as you like.

Bon Burger

Bon Burger is the new venture from Freek Kattenberg, known for Bottleshop in East Amsterdam, who brings together his love of burgers and natural wine with this concept. After years of successful burger pop-ups at Bottleshop, he decided it was time for a permanent location in West Amsterdam, on the popular deck on Jacob van Lennepkade. Kattenberg believes that doing something as simple as a hamburger well is a craft, and this is reflected in his focus on grilling technique and quality. The meat comes from Dutch dual-purpose cows, which first lived as dairy cows and are therefore more sustainable and flavorful. Bon Burger feels like a relaxed neighborhood spot where connoisseurs and curious passers-by come together for burgers, wine, and long evenings by the water.

While you eat your freshly baked croissant, you can watch the bakers passionately kneading dough on the flour-covered workbenches in the shop and in front of the display window. The bakers use a traditional method of bread making, with the sourdough bread rising for no less than 26 hours. This ensures a delicious crispy crust and a soft inside. They only use organic products and make everything by hand. Another fun thing is that you can take a workshop on making sourdough bread or croissants.

The Mercator Market

The MercatorMarkt is known as the tastiest and sweetest market in De Baarsjes, and we understand why. It is a genuine neighborhood market where local residents can sell their own goods, and otherwise it is a small business with a good story. There is theater for young and old, various workshops, and a merry-go-round for the children. Their goal is to create a sustainable, high-quality market that the neighborhood can rely on. Well worth a visit!

The Wine Spot

The Wine Spot was founded in 2012 by Filipe and Paulo in a small anti-squatting shop on Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam. This temporary location was quickly replaced by a larger, permanent location at Admiraal de Ruijterweg 43. This wine shop offers an extensive range of wines from all over Europe, both natural and classic varieties. Each bottle comes with a handwritten note explaining the wine, its region of origin, and the vinification process. For those who prefer something different, there is also a wide selection of craft beers, port, sherry, and dessert wines.
