What the resident will miss
"With the last modernization I was able to carry out, I removed a partition wall in the kitchen. Upon removing it, the original ornaments emerged, along with the original paint layer, dating back roughly 380 years. You then become an archaeologist in your own home! But also, the silence of the canal at dusk, the rustling of the wind, and the chirping of birds make it so special to live here."

The building
The building housing the apartment is a stunning monumental canal house with a fascinating history. The original building dates back to 1640 and was initially only three windows wide. Over the centuries, the building has undergone several transformations. In 1730, a significant renovation was carried out, adding features such as the wide hallway and the monumental staircase. Around 1770, the adjacent coach house was acquired, and in the 19th century, both buildings were merged into a wide residential house, while retaining an 18th-century hall.
The hallway of the building is a true feast for the eyes, adorned with impressive wall and ceiling sculptures of stucco, depicting, among other things, the continents and classical allegories. The beautiful wooden railings of the staircase to the upper floors, crafted by father and son Van Logteren in the first half of the 18th century, are also masterpieces in themselves.
The building now boasts a facade five windows wide, with an imposing front door in the middle and a double stoop. It comprises four residential floors, a basement, and an attic at the top. A plaque on the facade commemorates one of the famous residents, Heinrich Schliemann, the discoverer of Troy. The building also served as a community for the brothers of Saint Louis, with the front room still visible in the canal museum.
Currently, the building is divided into eight residential units, including the rear house, and is equipped with an elevator.
