Designvision
Plan Zuid is the urban development plan for the expansion neighborhoods roughly south of the Ceintuurbaan and De Lairessestraat, and between the Amstel and Schinkel rivers: the Nieuwe Pijp, Stadionbuurt, Apollobuurt, and Rivierenbuurt.
At the core of Plan Zuid lay geometry, predominantly triangles and pentagons. Berlage aimed to achieve unity with this approach: all parts of the plan were to be equally important, with space for grandeur at central locations. In the eastern part, the Y-shaped layout of Vrijheidslaan, Churchilllaan, and Rooseveltlaan defined the structure. In the western part, the Minervalaan was meant to serve as the central axis. Between these major thoroughfares, Berlage conceived many tranquil streets and squares.
In response to rationalism, the early 20th century saw a group of architects emerge who aimed for a more artistic expression. This led to an expressionist architectural style known as the Amsterdam School. Here, everything revolved around the exterior form, which was solid and robust. Characteristic features included ladder windows: windows divided by a large number of muntins.
Entrance
The apartment on the third and fourth floor can be reached via the well-maintained staircase, with its own entrance from the second floor.
