A Hidden Mendini House on Recht Boomssloot

Behind a relatively unassuming facade on Recht Boomssloot lies one of Amsterdam’s most extraordinary interiors. A home designed by Alessandro Mendini for Frans Haks, the former director of the Groninger Museum, it is also a comprehensive work in which architecture, design, art, and theater converge seamlessly. Aside from the Groninger Museum, this is the only complete Mendini interior in the Netherlands.

The Original Power

The current resident, Paul Moreno, saw not just an apartment during his first viewing, but above all the vision behind it. The colors were less vivid than they are now, and the interior had lost some of its impact, but the potential was Immediately . The double staircase with the sunken bathtub in the middle felt almost comical, but at the same time made it clear that this was never intended to be an ordinary living space. This was a work of art to live in.

During the restoration, he sought to restore that original energy. The home strongly evokes the exhibition halls of the Groninger Museum, where Frans Haks worked and where color, art, and space come together in a similar way. By restoring the apartment’s vibrancy, the current resident has carried on that tradition—not as a museum, but as a place for entertaining, social evenings, and gatherings. A “hosting environment,” as he calls it, in which living, collecting, and gathering are once again interconnected.

Moreover, the story isn’t limited to the ground floor. Above this distinctive space lies another independent apartment, connected via the dramatic interior staircase but also accessible through the front stairwell. This creates a unique two-story whole: the two spaces can be used separately, yet are strongly connected to one another in terms of both function and layout.

His own style turned out to fit almost naturally into the distinctive world of Mendini and Haks. As a result, the restoration didn’t feel like an attempt to preserve something foreign, but rather like the continuation of a story that was already present in the space. With great care, love, and effort, he restored the apartment to the vibrancy it has once again today.

A New Beginning in Amsterdam

The house was built in the late 1990s, after Haks and his partner Johan WM Ambaum moved from Groningen to Amsterdam. Following his tumultuous departure from the Groninger Museum, Haks deliberately distanced himself from public life, in which he had played a central role for many years. Amsterdam offered him anonymity, freedom, and a new context. On Recht Boomssloot, near the Nieuwmarkt, he found a place where he could create a world entirely his own.

The property was owned by Haks’ brother Leo, who had purchased it in the 1990s. Initially, Haks and Ambaum lived temporarily on the top floor, but gradually a plan took shape to permanently transform the building to their liking. In doing so, they deliberately opted for a structure that was almost like two separate homes: Ambaum lived primarily on the first floor among his nineteenth-century art collection, while Haks transformed the ground floor into a distinctly postmodern interior where contemporary art, design, and performance came together.

AM107132-2139029-Recht-Boomssloot-41H, Amsterdam-279464154

"“Life is like a theater,” Haks said later in an interview. “I want to live in a place that gives the impression that I’m just acting.”"

Friendship as a starting point

Haks enlisted the help of his close friend Alessandro Mendini for the design. The two met during the development of the Groninger Museum, where Mendini had been involved as lead architect on the iconic new museum building since the late 1980s. What began as a professional collaboration grew into a close friendship. Mendini later referred to Haks as his “museum friend.”

It was precisely this that gave the project Recht Boomssloot its exceptionally personal character. The interior was not developed as a public commission, but as an almost intimate collaboration between the client and the designer. Many discussions took place directly Location Milan or Amsterdam, without extensive publicity or formal documentation. Even within the Atelier Mendini archives, there is project limited documentation of project .

The Entrance as the First Scene

That personal touch is Immediately in the design. Mendini designed not only the interior, but also the entire experience of arriving at and moving through the house. For the entrance, he developed fourteen different designs, composed of geometric patterns and bold blocks of color. Ultimately, a combination of pink and yellow was chosen, in which the front door virtually blends into the composition.

Casa Toverbal

Color plays a central role in the home—not as decoration, but as a spatial tool. Walls, ceilings, and floors are composed of bold swaths of color that define spaces, enhance sightlines, and constantly shift the atmosphere. Pink, red, yellow, blue, and green are combined in a way that feels both playful and carefully composed.

Those colors Immediately bring Immediately the Groninger Museum, where artist Peter Struycken developed an extensive color palette for the exhibition halls of the new museum building. Haks was so convinced of the power of that system that he wanted to apply the same approach to his home. As a result, the apartment was soon nicknamed “Casa Toverbal.”

Living as Theater

Behind the facade lies an interior that feels more like a set or an installation than a traditional Amsterdam apartment. Through a red-pink vestibule featuring Bisazza mosaics, you enter a dark, studio-like space where perspective, sightlines, and the use of color define the entire experience.

The apartment is organized around a single central visual axis that culminates in the most theatrical element of the interior: a sunken bathtub, placed on a raised platform at the rear of the space. When all the doors are open, the line of sight extends directly from the street to the bathtub. It is an almost surreal gesture that fits perfectly within both Mendini’s postmodern design world and Haks’s theatrical personality.

For Haks, that theatricality was an integral part of the living experience itself. The apartment was designed for dinners, receptions, and conversations about art, architecture, and design. Guests were welcomed in Haks’s studio, after which they would proceed via a double staircase and a glass bridge to Ambaum’s floor for elaborate dinners. That double staircase deliberately enhanced the scenographic character of the home: a contemporary interpretation of a Baroque theater set.

“Life is like a theater,” Haks said later in an interview. “I want to live in a place that gives the impression that I’m just acting.”

AM107132-2139029-Recht-Boomssloot-41H, Amsterdam-279464200

A Hidden Chapter

What makes this project special is that the interior remained completely intact for only a short time. Between its completion around 2001 and Haks’s death in 2006, the house functioned as a unified whole. After that, much of the interior gradually disappeared from view.

It was only after Ambaum’s death in 2018 that the residence came back into the spotlight. Staff from Amsterdam’s Monuments and Archaeology Department visited the property after a new owner had announced renovation plans. It became clear then just how exceptional the interior actually was—not only because of its connection to Mendini, but also because of the rare completeness of the concept. The apartment was subsequently granted a high heritage designation.

To this day, the house on Recht Boomssloot remains a hidden chapter in Dutch design history. An interior in which Mendini and Haks together created a world that completely defied convention—somewhere between a home, a theater, a work of art, and an installation. And as if that weren’t remarkable enough, the story doesn’t end there. Behind the double staircase lies a second chapter: the apartment on the floor above, once the domain of Johan WM Ambaum, connected to this space via the interior staircase and via its own entrance on the street side.

Alessandro Mendini

Alessandro Mendini (1931–2019) is considered one of the most influential designers and architects of the twentieth century. As a key figure in the Italian radical design movement, he opposed the strict functionalism that had dominated design discourse for decades. Through his work for Studio Alchimia and later Atelier Mendini, he introduced a more playful and emotional approach to design, in which color, ornamentation, and symbolism once again took on an important role. For Mendini, design had to be not only functional, but also surprising, moving, and narrative.

He gained international recognition for iconic designs such as the Poltrona di Proust and his collaborations with brands like Alessi, Kartell, Venini, and Swarovski. He also completed architectural projects around the world, including the Groninger Museum, which became one of the most distinctive museum buildings in the Netherlands. In all his work, the boundaries between architecture, art, and design blurred. It is precisely this holistic approach that is also reflected in the home on Recht Boomssloot, where Mendini did not merely design an interior but created an entire living environment in which color, objects, circulation, and rituals come together to form a carefully composed whole.

Neighborhood

Tucked away between the Nieuwmarkt and the Oudeschans lies the Recht Boomssloot, one of the most distinctive canals in the historic Lastage district. While the canal belt was built for the merchant elite, this part of the city emerged from a very different dynamic. Over the centuries, the neighborhood evolved into a multifaceted urban district where living, working, and commerce were closely intertwined. Its proximity to the Nieuwmarkt, Chinatown, the Waterlooplein, and the Oude Schans continues to foster a vibrant mix of cultures and functions. At the same time, a remarkable tranquility reigns on Recht Boomssloot. Culturally speaking, the residence is also exceptionally centrally located. Within walking distance are, among others, the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, the Rembrandt House, the Jewish Cultural Quarter, and the FOAM Photography Museum. Galleries, concert halls, independent bookstores, and theaters are scattered throughout the surrounding neighborhoods,

In the 16th century (the time of the Dutch East India Company), the cafe offered cheap accommodation to sailors. The sailors brought monkeys from overseas. These adorable monkeys were, of course, full of fleas, so everyone who stayed In 't Aepjen came out scratching from the itching. Allegedly, this is where the name of the cafe and the expression "in de aap gelogeerd zijn" (to be in the monkey's lodging, meaning to be in a bad situation) come from. Nowadays, you can still enjoy a drink and look around at all the relics that have been preserved.

The shop is almost impossible to miss because the smell of the cookies greets you as you walk across the busy Spui square. A must-try for chocolate lovers!
