The building
The history of the Czaar Peterstraat and the surrounding Eastern Islands reflects Amsterdam’s maritime past. Constructed in the second half of the 17th century, this area served as the home to numerous shipyards, including those of the Admiralty of Amsterdam and the Dutch East India Company. The area where Czaar Peterstraat now lies was originally reclaimed from the IJ in 1663 and housed the rope factories of the VOC, where vital ropes for the Company were manufactured. At the northern tip of the future Czaar Peterstraat was the Keerweer, where ships turned before reentering the harbor.
Until the 19th century, the area near the Czaar Peterbuurt was the site of the De Funen bulwark. Remnants of this bulwark were discovered a few years ago during excavations in the area. The surroundings were once dotted with various windmills, of which ‘De Goede Verwachting,’ a cocoa mill, was the last remaining mill before it was demolished in 1906 to make way for new construction.
The first residential construction in this neighborhood dates back to the last quarter of the 19th century, including the characteristic ‘Dubbeltjespanden.’ However, over the past two decades, the neighborhood has undergone significant development into a lively and trendy urban district. In 2015, the Czaar Peterstraat was even awarded the title of the most enjoyable shopping street in the Netherlands, reflecting its transformation from a historic to a contemporary and vibrant neighborhood.
