The building
Zocherstraat in Amsterdam is located in the Overtoomse Sluis district in West, known for its distinctive 19th-century architectural style. The street is named after Dutch landscape architect Jan David Zocher, the designer of the nearby Vondelpark. In 1920, six plots were developed here with three retail buildings and three lower-floor residences, each with separately rented upper-floor apartments, commissioned by N.V. Amsterdamsche Maatschappij voor Woningbouw. This area, then known as “De Nieuwe Stad,” marked the expansion of Amsterdam at that time.
The architecture of the buildings is classified as eclecticism, combining elements of neo-Renaissance, neo-Gothic, and neo-Classicism, with richly decorated facades that adorn the neighborhood. In 2001, the top floor was converted into residential space, resulting in an apartment of just over 100 m². At the same time, the rooftop terrace and roof extension were approved by the municipality, with the drawings available. To align its use with the legal status, the deed and drawings of the division were updated. A 2003 municipal survey found in the city archives indicates that the building’s foundation is rated at quality level II.
Living and cooking
In this apartment, the kitchen is strategically and stylishly positioned in the heart of the home. Recently installed, the kitchen features a sleek, modern design with a matte black finish and a white countertop. It includes a barista corner, ideal for coffee enthusiasts. The central cooking island offers ample storage space and serves as a cozy spot for cooking and socializing. The kitchen is fully equipped with all necessary built-in appliances, including an oven/microwave, a refrigerator with freezer, an induction cooktop with recirculation extraction, and a Quooker for instant boiling water.
What makes this apartment particularly special is that the dining table is not directly adjacent to the kitchen but is situated at the front in the dormer. This creates a separate, charming dining area that is bright and inviting during the day.
The more intimate living area, located in the center of the apartment, provides a sense of privacy and coziness. This space, with a ceiling height of 2.65 meters, is illuminated by a skylight above the kitchen and features a beautiful wooden floor. It offers a comfortable and bright setting, perfect for quiet evenings or a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Sleeping and bathing
This apartment features two thoughtfully designed bedrooms and a centrally located bathroom. The front bedroom is characterized by its unique, playful shape and is equipped with two windows that allow ample natural light to enter. The charm of this room is enhanced by the roof’s front gable and a custom-built wardrobe providing ample storage space.
The rear bedroom is more spacious, offering a comfortable sleeping area. This room features French windows on both the side and rear, allowing for pleasant light and ventilation. Like the rest of the apartment, this room also has high-quality oak laminate flooring, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The bathroom combines functionality with aesthetics and is equipped with both a bathtub and a walk-in shower, providing daily luxury and comfort. Between these elements is an elegant washbasin, supported by a practical towel radiator. The floor is tiled in a calm taupe shade, while the walls are finished with fresh white tiles, giving the space a timeless and bright appearance. This design makes the bathroom not only functional but also a stylish area within the apartment.
Rooftop terrace
The open staircase leads to the rooftop cabin, which is directly adjacent to the terrace, making access to the rooftop terrace simple and practical. This cabin provides extra storage space with built-in cabinets, ideal for storing seasonal items and other necessities.
The terrace features a spacious layout with a Mediterranean vibe. It is decorated with numerous pots and plants that contribute to a green and vibrant atmosphere. A large lounge sofa offers a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy the sunset. Additionally, there is a second seating area with an elegant round table, perfect for dining and cozy evenings.
This expansive terrace functions as an additional outdoor living room for most of the year, not only extending the apartment’s living space but also adding a unique and valuable outdoor area to the home.
Neighborhood
From an industrial area with windmills to a city district with rich architecture, the Vondelbuurt has undergone a significant transformation since the 19th century. The neighborhood is named after the poet Joost van den Vondel. It is characterized by various architectural styles, such as the neoclassical building of the Hollandsche Manege and the Zevenlandenhuizen, which feature seven different architectural styles representing specific countries. The charm of the Vondelstraat and Romer Visscherstraat near the park adds to the area’s allure.
Bootcamping, picnicking, paddling. All of this is possible in Vondelpark. This is the green heart of the city where everyone comes together, and differences in status or origin fade away. The sun-drenched terrace of the Renaissance Vondelpark Pavilion, now Parkzuid, remains a beautiful spot for a drink or dinner. This is the neighborhood for anyone who loves well-built, spacious homes close to the city; with the Overtoom and Helmersbuurt, specialty shops, furniture stores, and daily necessities are all within walking distance.

What the owner is going to miss
This home is truly unique and offers everything you could wish for! The property was completely renovated in 2021, so you can enjoy brand-new amenities and modern comfort. The location of the house is fantastic—within walking distance of numerous charming shops and delicious restaurants, and directly adjacent to the beautiful Vondelpark. But what truly makes this home exceptional is the spacious rooftop terrace. Here, you can enjoy the sun all day long. Thanks to the convenient rooftop cabin, you can sit outside comfortably early in the season, even when it’s still a bit chilly. Finally, the view is breathtaking. You look directly out over Vondelpark, and when the trees lose their leaves, you can even see the impressive skyline of the Zuidas. This is living at its best!
My favorite spot in the house is undoubtedly the rooftop terrace. Once you’re up there, the city seems far away. You’re surrounded by the cheerful sound of birds from Vondelpark and can truly escape the hustle and bustle of city life. It feels like a tranquil oasis in the middle of the city. And in winter? I love gathering with friends and family around the cooking island while we cook together. It’s the heart of the home where the best conversations and most enjoyable moments take place!
What makes this location so special is that you actually get the best of three city districts: Oud-West, Oud-Zuid, and Zuid. You benefit from the convenience and charm of each neighborhood. For your daily groceries, you have a choice of a wealth of fantastic shops, from well-known supermarkets to charming specialty stores where you can find the finest products for a dinner with friends and family. Within walking distance, you’ll find numerous fantastic restaurants, each with its own atmosphere and taste experiences. Here, you live in the vibrant heart of the city, with everything you need within reach!
For my daily groceries, I always enjoy going to Van der Laan butcher shop on Zeilstraat—the quality is top-notch! For fresh fish, IJmuider Vishandel on Amstelveenseweg is my go-to place. And when it comes to wine, Chabrol on Overtoom is definitely the place to be for the best wines. For dining out, Ron Gastrobar on Sophialaan is an absolute favorite, as is Bonnie on Amstelveenseweg, where the atmosphere is always cozy! And for fans of Asian or Indian cuisine, there are plenty of great restaurants within walking distance, such as Restaurant Blauw. For a quick and delicious takeaway meal, Kokita is the place to go. On weekends, I like to start my day with a great cup of coffee at Coffee District on Hendrik Jacobzstraat. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a good coffee. In short, the neighborhood is bursting with hidden gems where you are continually surprised!
Fortunately, I am staying in the area, as my girlfriend and I have bought a wonderful house near Zocherstraat. But I will definitely miss my lovely apartment. Especially the rooftop terrace is something truly special. The many dinners I’ve had there with friends and family are memories I will always cherish. It’s really a unique spot where you can enjoy the sun all day long—a luxury that is hard to surpass!
