Design vision
The architect of the building at Spinozastraat 15 was IJme Gerardus Bijvoets (Gzn), a Dutch architect who designed various buildings in Amsterdam and Westbeemster, as well as the Tivoli Winter Garden in Rotterdam. This exceptional ground-floor apartment was completely and thoroughly renovated in 2020, including foundation repair, new plumbing, electrical work, bathrooms, kitchen, and more. The renovation was carried out in collaboration with the design firm Designwolf, known for their motto: “making the world a little more beautiful.” This project exemplifies that philosophy. Designwolf strives to create bespoke solutions for their clients, crafting spaces, places, and details that enrich the living experience. They design functional elements that adapt to different situations throughout the day, with strategically placed sightlines, mezzanines, and windows that foster a sense of connectivity within the interior.
Living and cooking
The living room is elegantly divided into a sitting and dining area, separated by a subtle elevation. This elevation serves as a stylish partition and provides space for beautiful custom cabinets or an extra play area for children. The sitting area is located at the front of the house, where the afternoon sun streams in beautifully. From the sofa, there is a view of the quiet street and the water.
The custom-made kitchen perfectly blends design and functionality. The robust work and sink island, complete with a cozy bar area, forms the heart of the kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances such as a built-in oven, combi-oven, stove, dishwasher, Quooker, and a fridge/freezer combination. The choice of various natural materials gives the kitchen a timeless appeal. The dining table, located near the kitchen, is the spot where the family gathers to enjoy meals together.
The kitchen features a polished concrete floor, while the living room boasts a warm oak herringbone parquet floor. Underfloor heating is present throughout.
Next to the kitchen is the staircase leading to the sleeping floor, a refined staircase with high-quality finishes that seamlessly blends with the rest of the interior.
Sleeping and bathing
The sleeping floor is spaciously designed and thoughtfully crafted with a focus on functionality. During the renovation, the basement was deepened, resulting in an impressive ceiling height of an average of 2.80 meters. The centrally placed steel staircase connects the living area with this floor. Thanks to this strategic placement, all rooms are directly accessible, and the landing is optimally utilized as an office and storage space. Custom-built cabinets along various walls provide extra storage for clothing, suitcases, and more. The colors and materials harmonize perfectly, creating a cohesive and balanced atmosphere.
The master bedroom is located at the front and features an ensuite bathroom. This elegant bathroom includes a walk-in shower, bathtub, and double vanity. Calming colors and designer faucets create a serene and luxurious ambiance. Adjacent to the bathroom is the walk-in closet, currently used as a fourth bedroom.
The two additional bedrooms are situated at the rear, offering views of the garden. Both rooms are functionally designed, with a width of 2.70 meters.
Additionally, there is a second bathroom, styled similarly to the ensuite. This bathroom is equipped with a shower and sink, and there is a separate toilet. A laundry room is also present.
For optimal comfort, the entire floor is equipped with underfloor heating.
The outdoor spaces
Adjacent to the living room is the spacious terrace, an extension of the kitchen for beautiful summer days. The garden table invites cozy dinners, while the sun transforms the terrace into a private oasis from around five in the afternoon. With an area of approximately 15 m² and a fixed staircase leading to the garden, the terrace creates the ideal connection between indoor and outdoor living. The garden, approximately 46 m² in size, has been meticulously landscaped and receives sunlight in the morning and again from 2:30 PM onwards. This backyard offers a peaceful spot where you won’t be disturbed by street noise, making it a perfect place to relax. At the back of the garden, a garden house of about 5 m² was built in 2022 (with a permit), providing an ideal workspace or (music) studio. This insulated garden house is equipped with electricity and electric underfloor heating.
