History
The building at Westerstraat 187 is a municipal landmark dating from 1868. Designed by architect B. de Greef in the Neoclassical style, it originally housed the Public Day and Evening School. This was one of the first secondary schools in Amsterdam. Later, the building became home to the Second Trade School of the Society for the Working Class and an evening trade school.
Construction of an additional wing for the school building began on the left side of the building in 1954. The wing was designed by architect J. van der Linden of the firm Posthumus Meyjes & Van der Linden.
The building continued to serve as a school well into the 21st century. In 2008, Het Westerhuis as we know it today was created: a multi-tenant building for companies in the creative and business sectors. Marcel Wanders Studio transformed the interior of the existing historic building into a modern and distinctive space.
